Cordless drill / auger question
« on: Dec 10, 2016, 08:12 AM »
Hey guys, so im pretty sure Ill be getting a new brushless cordless drill for christmas either by my doing or the Mrs.  If wanted a cordless auger set up for a while as I dont drill many holes and I lover my old Jiffy 30 but she is heavy when pulling across the snow with all the other gear.  My questions is, I want an 8 inch auger (and yes i know they work better with the 6 inch and its double the work), what auger works the best with the drill??  Could i get away with a mora or will I need to get more expensive with a K Drill or clam combo??

First in line 8" Nils then Mora do your shopping and get a used Mora from Sweden and a set of Swedish blades the new ones are made in China need I say more and Milwaukee 18v 1/2" hammer drill is the only way to go check them out for torque ratings NH Bragg has just as good pricing as Home Desparate and better selection.

For an 8" bit, I would find a nice used Mora on Craigslist for $20-30...

The Mora 8" is the lightest 8" bit available...

If you don't want the newer Fuel Milwaukee, then you might wanna get the gear box to turn that 8"...

For what it's worth, I turn an 8" Nils with a 19.2V Craftsman drill/driver.  I get about 15 holes in 2' of ice using the 4ah battery.  It works for me, as I rarely drill more than ten holes.

That said, Snopro also has an 8" Nils, but runs his with a Fuel.  He can get 30 holes out of a battery.

I have a Nils, as well as a K Drill. K drill is extremely light and rips through the ice. I have it on a clam plate with fuel drill. The other I run on a small Porter Cable (cheap at Lowes) drill. Never had any problem, except sometimes getting bound up in the ice.

K drills can be hard to find when they sell out. Stop into the shop and you could look at the K drill, Nils and Mora. Overall I think the K drill cuts the best and by far the lightest (7 pounds or so). Cleans a hole perfectly as well.

My scale is older than me, but my Mora 8" weighed just under 4lbs...

Sorry, with the drill/clam plate. Have you seen a K drill? It has plastic flights compared to the Mora's metal ones. The heaviest part is the bottom where the (2) 8" massive blades go. They are both light and I'm sure either of them will do the job and make people content. Ford vs Chevy theories. We could discuss and debate it all day. Just what I personally have used, thats all. Happy Holidays!!!

I've just got a Ryobi 18V drill and  6" and 8" Eskimo hand augers. I bought an adapter last year, and the 6 inch is definitely easier on the drill. Either size can tackle about 12 inches of ice reasonable well for multiple holes, but beyond that you're really over reaching. I'm sure more expensive drill / auger combos would lend better results, but I don't think they would match up to a purpose designed electric ice auger. I only tried it because the adapter was $20 and I already had hand augers and a drill on hand.

.

The new clam plate has a gearbox that gears the drill down 2:1 . It slows the blade but adds a ton of torque . That makes it an almost must have for an 8 inch auger.

Yes, I've seen them, but never held one in my hand.. The guy in the phone at Vexilar said the 8" bit weighs 5lbs without the drill..

Should the Kdrill be lighter than a Mora, I would hope so, but I don't think it is, at least not according to my scale or the sales rep at vexilar..

Having the lightest gear is really important to some.. I wonder why Vexilar doesn't list the weight of their bits without the drill?

I have the gear box, haven't tried it on the ice, but it seems well made...

You can buy the plate with the gear box, but it also includes an 8" clam bit...$$$

I think it comes with or without. I just got one and I don't think it has it at $55 but I guess I didn't specifically check. It would be nice if it did as I plan to run an 8" mora

That 8 inch Mora is 7 inch with 8 blades. Swap to a pair of 7 inch. Goes much better.

You can use the search box in the upper left hand of your screen and find out the answer to probably every question you have about any drill or auger on the market.

Should a m18 run that fine without any gear box? I had planned to find a end of season or Craigslist 6" but 7" blades would be just as cheap if it'll run it ok

I've run my 7" laser auger with the first gen Milwaukee m18 driver drill with no problems for two seasons already, this being the third. It has only ever stoped from overheating on me once and that was because I was just seeing how fast I could punch holes and cover that little pond. It does get bogged down at times, it's very important s to lift now and then to clear the shaved ice from hole and lessen the work on the fluting of the auger.

Thanks for the insight guys.  Similarly to Dirty, I love my Jiffy but a bit of a beast hauling it around.  Bought an 8" nils last year but only hit the ice once last winter.  Worked great firing it with the 15" pipes  ;)  but have considered using the drill attachment when I'm feeling like doing a little less work on the water.  I thought battery life may be an issue with the cold but seems that may not be the case with a quality drill.

I used the Clam plate without the gear box with a DeWalt 20v Lithium, and an HT 8" hand auger bit last year. I was able to punch about 10 holes on both 1.3ah batteries.

Not being overly pumped about the small number of holes I'm investigating larger batteries and the gear box this year. I also got a new 8" auger bit made by Arksen for this season. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck and tight lines!

i had some LLBeans coupons, my wife works there so I got a discount, and the last of a gift card netted me the nils 6 inch cordless auger, im going to pair that with a dewalt 18v with two batteries... all indications through research is that this should be a good setup... of course I have the jiffy as a backup
