This guy:  20V brushless, "up to" 600lbs torque with 2 2Ah batteries.  In store they are $159 for the set.  The batteries are supposed to be good to -5 degrees.

https://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/power-tools-accessories/power-drills-accessories/masterforce-reg-flexpower-reg-20-volt-lithium-ion-cordless-brushless-1-2-drill-driver-kit/p-1444426415420-c-9072.htm?tid=8975982609743311029

I did ask, and they say I can try it for 30 days and just bring it back if it sux :)   Extra 2.5Ah batteries are $61, 5.0Ah batteries are $88

We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Surprisingly they are well made.  I think you can find them at a better price as well.
I know someone using that drill with a 6" Nils and it drills without a hicup.

last year i saw a guy using a harbor freight cheapie on his kdrill.  he had used it all season and the 2 seasons before he used a mora auger with it.   you are fine using masterforce.

i run a milwaukee and it is great but i'm not a "ITS GOT TO BE A 300 DOLLAR DRILL OTHERWISE IT WONT WORK" guy.  use what you got.  you'll vary in the amount of holes you can drill and any drill can burn up.   i have an 18v black and decker drill that i used for almost 12 years while working construction and other home stuff.

I can't see buying a super expensive drill, because almost all the use it will get will be during hard water season.  On the other hand.  I think I did talk myself into upgrading to a brushless Rigid hammer drill for a little bit more.  http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-1-2-in-Cordless-Brushless-Compact-Hammer-Drill-Kit-R86116K/206596560   It's a little more expensive than the Menards drill.  But it's got the lifetime warranty, even on batteries, and 700lbs of torque for $179.

I looked at that Dewalt mentioned at Farm and Fleet, but it's cheaper at Amazon or Home Depot.  I just think the way Dewalt hides their torque rating stinks.  They have some funky home made power unit that is based on max RPM.  That's a worthless measurement for calculating slow speed power needed to drill holes in hard water.

I just picked up a 5" Lazer auger and a pair of extra blades today at Gander Mountain.  Today only they had a $20 off $100 deal.  Ended up being $108 or so out the door.  Now off to Ebay to get me a craptastic Strikemaster drill adapter with the safety bolts that stick out the sides for $20 or so.:)

i would avoid having any thing stick out like those giant bolts that can grab your clothes or person. you might want to look at ice master adapter instead.

Couldn't agree more. If I'm going to drop $160 on a drill I want to make sure that its quality AND make by a company that will stand behind their product.
I used a Milwaukee compact M18 drill with a 6" auger the last two years. Just upgraded to a Milwaukee hammer drill to run an 8" auger.

No I haven't and don't think 600 in lbs is enough for a 8" Nils.

M18 Fuels (2704-22) can be found pretty easily for under 250, I just picked one up for 215, not from Home Depot though.

I bought the menards drill. But with the 4.0 ah battery, mounted it on the clam plate and has worked well so far. Granted We don't get 12" ice very often, but works well in 6". First post and really enjoy the site

I've used the 20 volt master force on the job site and was really impressed with the power it had. I say go for it.

Thanks Dave R, I forgot the drill was 99$ at our Menards, probably can get it cheaper if you watch for it. I have Milwaukee  fuel tools at work nice, but did not want to spend the money

As said these are surprisingly well made.   They aren't the Tool Shop or Chicago Forge type tools.
I'm not embarrassed to say I bought a lower torque model 6 years ago on black Friday. $50 for the drill and two 2 amp batteries.
I don't use it on an auger and didn't intend to but use it for everything else.  Drill is going strong and the batteries are good as new and don't discharge during storage.   If they offered 800+ torque I'd be using one for the auger.
