Black Hills Waterfowl
« on: Nov 14, 2016, 10:48 PM »
Hey guys, I know this isn't fishing, and if this isn't the right place for this, feel free to remove it.  I know the Black Hills area isn't well-known for waterfowl hunting, but has anyone hunted Orman or angy with any success? I have also heard some things about Curlew, New Underwood, and Bear Butte.  It is really hard to find information on it, so I was wondering if any fellow outdoorsmen on here have tried it.  I have also seen people hunting below Pactola in the basin and on the creek.  Is that legal? I see quite a few birds down there, but I didn't think you could hunt there. Just interested to see if anyone has tried it and has any pointers. Can't wait for ice season.

Kinda late to post but for future info the best waterfowl in the Hills area is actually on the plains in the Oral to Smithwick area.  This is where everything off Angustora goes to feed and hang during the day.

Do you know if people hunt on lake with any success? If so do you know what parts of the lake are open to hunting?

Thanks

I'm also curious if you can hunt below Pactola on that pond in the basin. I've seen people jumping ducks on it, but it just seems kind of odd. I know you can hunt on the creeks, but it seems different for some reason to hunt on that pond.

I don't see why you couldn't, It's Forest Service land and ive never seen it listed as a no zone for waterfowl.  We used to hunt Lake Vermillion below Gavins Point when I lived east river.  Give a conservation officer a call if you want to be 100% their numbers are in the hunting reg book.  The problem though is you will just kill the couple ducks on that pond and that's it.  All you see in the Hills is small resident populations.  Its not like east river where more move in.

Orman gets a fair amount of pressure and the birds tend to flock on the ice and on island SE of the intersection of Fishermans Rd. and Fishing access Road on the way to Rocky Point. Quite honestly I believe you may have a better chance of success by patterning the birds when they get up to feed vs. trying to get to them on the ice.
