Auger blades maintenance
« on: Dec 10, 2016, 09:54 AM »
How important is it to oil manual auger blades after each trip out on the ice? I am just curious if this would increase the cutting performance, or does it matter. I would assume that oiling would help prevent rust buildup, but not sure if this would actually make it easier drilling.
Thanks

I think the only time my blades have seen oil was when I sharpen them. While cutting I would have to believe that the water from melted ice would be more than enough lubrication.  I personally have stainless blades and haven't worried about rust.   Maybe for the off season.

Even though the blades are "stainless" they can still rust if they are left wet or damp...

I just make sure they are stored dry..

Considering oil attracts moisture ~ just spray on a tad of Amsoil Metal Protector.

Best advice, don't let anyone use your auger. I rather cut someone a hole than let them use mine.

Never had a problem  in  30+ years without it.  I just use some metal protection when it gets put away for the season.

I never put anything on my blades, just wiped them off and let them dry and they didn't rust.

What...
...no one said WD-40 ???

Mine have never seen any oil....ever. After 3 or 4 years I get an exchange set at the bait shop for $10 or so. That's about it.
