Favorite fish species to ice fish for

I love to catch eyes crappies and large mouths through the ice. For favorites but perch gills and trout/char come close behind

"Favorite to fish for" and "targeting" are different options.

Targeting is more specific and can/usually requires more time for the "big game" species.

Favorite fish are usually those that can be more easily caught and generally better table fare.

Remember that most states have strict limits on bigger game species and less strict rules regarding general panfish species.

You can feed your family with one laker, and if you're only allowed one per day, you'd have to go back every day to get a meal per day.
You can feed your family, the neighbors family and their neighbors family with a bunch of perch, sunfish or crappie, or feed your family for a week.

That's all I'm trying to convey.

As for the relation of fish to fighting ability, I've found that although lakers and bass can be bigger they don't fight too hard compared to a smallmouth bass or white perch or run like pike and pickerel.

Basically you can choose whatever you enjoy most, as long as you can get out to fish!

But I'd rather clean 3 walleye!

I would never expect my kids or wife to enjoy walleye waiting... Actually did take her once, she said never again for Big Erie....

Trout- (Rainbows, Cutthroats, Browns, Splake and Lakers) because that is mainly what's around my area.

I'd say deep water crappie, then gills and bows, browns and lakers when I get the time to go to those lakes.

Yessah!  Us Mainers say Togue instead of lakers.

Panfish are ok to pass the time while waiting. LOL

 I tell you what, a 5lb carp will fight better than most fish in the lake.  Would love to ice one for sure

I'll love to take a couple small perch with the palm rod, then throw them on the tip up for pike.  Sit back, smoke a pipe full of Old Moses pipe tobacco, have a glass of single malt scotch, and watch for the flags!
