Recommended quick tip rods
« on: Dec 01, 2016, 05:00 PM »
Looking for recommendations on quick tip rods. I know some if the custom rod makers have the but I'm looking for some under $50.
I have a couple frabill quick tips and Like them,  but their build quality leaves something to be desired.

Frabill makes a nice quick tip inline in 30" and 27" models. Also the Tickle Stick by 13 Fishing is a nice rod.
Where's the ice bro?

I bought two Tickle Sticks (UL & l) when they 1st came out - both tips broke and the butt end of the rod is paper thin cork.  Apparently since then 13 Fishing came out with a "improved" version. I also just bought a Ice Hopper Flat Line 2.0, similar design to the Tickle Stick but it looks like a better made rod.  Also got a few Ice Hopper Extreme Taper rods, very fast tips.  But to date, I still think my Premier Ice St.Croix UL (the older version, not the puke green new ones) is still the best fast tip rod I own, but as I said that may change after I get some fishing time with these new Ice Hopper rods - google them, they look like great rods and well under $50:

I really like the action with the frabill quick tips, but they almost always have crooked eyes. And not just a little. I've seen some with an eye a quarter turn off. I don't know if they've gotten any better in the last couple years or not.

I saw some video with ice hopper. Was waiting to get more actual use reviews on them.

What I like most about the frabill quick tips is that I never have to use spring bobbers with them.

They're made out of custom blanks that rod builders use, just now Ice Hopper is offering some "pre-built" rods.  About the only thing I wish they had was reel seats, but most high quality rods don't. No biggie, I put the reels on with two small zip ties and then used some shrink wrap.  At $20 to $40 range you just can't go wrong.  I got a Flat Line 2 and 3 Extreme Taper rods and a Tight Line Pro in-line reel shipped to my place in Winnipeg, CND for $145 USD. I had to pay exchange/brokerage/duty on top of that too.  These rods do look worth the money over the crap at Cabelas/Walmart.

I want to see more of the snitch. Funny I can't find any videos about them.

Tickle stick are sweet for panfish!  I wouldn't use them for anything else because they are fragile. The 23"SUL is awesome. You will absolutely see strikes you have been missing before.
They have made them a little better built than the first year.

I generally fish a custom power noodle for panfish and perch, had a buddy who would get very frustrated at the number of fish I would catch on the same tackle compared to him. He was newer to ice fishing and didn't understand how my rod could make that much difference compared to his ugly stick. Took him to fleet farm and checked out all the rods they had. Decided in the end to picked up a number 8 snitch and told him I would buy it from him if he didn't think it made a difference. After the next day of fishing his hook up rate was pretty equal to mine. I gave it a try and was really impressed, has a soft quick tip and great backbone. Not far from the customs I've paid $100+ for. He ended up buying a second one the next day and I picked one up for my dad. Still think that it's the best noodle rod off the shelf to this day.

for the rods with no reel seat, rather than use zip ties use castration rings. I'm sure if you Google it you can find the kit that comes with a cone that you insert the end of the cork into the cone and slide the rings onto the cork.

I picked up a "28 meat stick to dead stick with last week based off of reviews on here and other sites. To my eye it's an ugly looking rod but I think it will fit the bill for a durable fiberglass dead stick rod.

Ha, now there is a farm boy solution that this city boy would never have thought of.  Thanks for the tip!!!  ;)
