Thinking about finally buying the app but my smartphone doesn't currently have service.  If I get the app and head out to ice fish, will the app show where I'm at in relation to the contours or would I need service/wifi for that?  Thanks

Can you open and use maps or any other gps using app? If so my guess would be yes but again, only a guess

It does, the GPS will work.  I have an iPhone and galaxy tablet that no longer have service contracts that i use with the Navionics app.  You just need to make sure you have all the necessary map areas downloaded using WiFi prior to heading out.

Yes, I was in Mexico last week fishing in the Pacific and had GPS on my iPhone 6.  I was in airplane mode, no data, no wifi.       No exact depths were showing because I didn't download the maps but the gps was working and it was showing some underwater terrain features.    You need to make sure you download the maps for the area your lakes are in before you go fishing.

I fish mostly Iowa and downloaded a large part of the state, it works with no data after downloading.
You can't get the fruit if you don't go out on the limb.

Dump the iPhone get a android, has an internal gps works regardless of Internet connection.
Much more reliable also.

Have any of you guys actually used the Navionics app?  ???

This is my 4th winter using Navionics for ice fishing, with an iPhone.

Yes - GPS works fine without internet. I've used iPhones and iPads in the deepest areas of Canada fishing with maps that I've saved ahead of time on the devices, both with Navionics and GaiaGPS.

With Navionics you can select a geographic area ahead of time and safe it directly to your phone, that way if you don't have internet (which I don't on a bunch of lakes), you'll still have those great depth charts. Heck, I have pretty much an entire 2-county area around me just saved on my phone with Navionics of some of my favorite lakes.

Android GPS functions pretty much the same way. Just make sure to keep those phones in your pockets until you need to use them, otherwise the batteries lose their charge significantly with cold weather!

Yes as mentioned above, you can download and area or lake map when you either zoom in it automatically downloads or go into the menu and and look for Download Map and drag the box around an area and download. Your mobile device will use the internal gps to track you. This also works in airplane mode which extends battery life.

To view the areas you have downloaded go to Menu > Map Options > Click on No Overlay and turn off the overlay and you will see the highlighted downloaded areas.

Just a tip make sure you do a Sync My Data to back up your Markers/Waypoints - Trails - Routes that way if your mobile device has an accident and you get a new one you can log back into your account and the data will sync
