Clam sled lights, small or large?
« on: Nov 06, 2016, 08:46 PM »
I'm planning to install the clam sled lights on my explorer.  I have already installed the clam
Light stick. I'd like to install one of the lights under each seat, and one inside the sled.  Does the small
Set provide enough light for This configuration, or should I go With the large?

I used the large Clam lights for my Voyager sled shining on to the fishable area. I guess my theory was can I really have too much light??? If your not in love with the Clam brand lights you might look on Amazon under Partsam LED. There are a lot of similar waterproof fixtures there for WAAAY less money. I ordered some for my boat this spring that worked great and I just ordered a 4-pack of white lights with 12 diodes per fixture for under 10 dollars. I think the 3 Clam large lights cost me like $40 a couple years back wen I installed them.

I was looking at the Clam lights as well, and pretty much like everything else clam related - they're way spendy! I was looking at some automotive LED's at the WalMarx the other day, it was $14 for a set of 4, waterproof and had an adhesive backing (probably would need some other method to get them to stay).

I think these are the lights being talked about...right?
https://www.amazon.com/Partsam-Marker-Trailer-Waterproof-Clearance/dp/B011BPS2UC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1478533151&sr=8-2&keywords=partsam+led+white+12+diodes+waterproof

I love the idea, as it would allow me to put 3 in the front and 1 in the sled.  As I am not experienced in wiring, I have a question that may seem basic to some.  The Clam setup comes with a wiring kit that allows the installer to wire bolt the lights into the longer wiring that alligator clips to your flasher battery or "extra" battery (Which I have for the light stick).  If I were to get the Partsam LED set, where can I get an easy wiring kit like the clam to alligator clip these 4 lights to my extra battery?

Thank you.

Yes those are the exact lights I ordered yesterday. I would just get some 12v wire (red/black) and alligator clips and  make my own wiring loom. I havent recieved the lights yet but i know that there will be some wiring to get all the lights in the fixture on. I should have the lights by Wednesday so I will actually know then what its going to take for sure. The partsam lights i ordered for the boat this spring were a little different but worked very good, these should have much better light and should light a shack up for sure.

#16awg should be plenty #18 even might work. I was going to wait and see what size was on the fixture and just go a size bigger...

I ordered the lights, some 16 guage wire, connectors, and alligator clips.  Will be a fun project, looking forward to it.

12v 9amp     Right now it is just used for the clam light stick, and will get used for the LED's soon also.  I run my Vex on it's own battery.

The lights came today Coach and they actually look good for as inexpensive as they are. They come with a metal plate which I won't be using for my planned build but the plate could be a great help for some applications and will serve as a good template for the power box I'm building. You will just hook up black to negative (-) from the battery and the red and yellow coming out of the fixture to the red (+) from the battery. They are nice and bright and I think a good buy for just under $2.50 per fixture. Heres some pics...

Has anybody hooked these up to a 4 position switch, like on a battery box?    OFF-Dim-Bright-Brightest

That would be a neat feature for a battery box.

I had no idea the Fuel batteries have the outlet on the side,  I have a new drill and 3 bats.   Ooops, just realized mine don't have the outlet, must be the 9 Amp only.

That battery has a 18v/12v converter attached to it.  Milwaukee sells them for about $29.  The converter has a dc outlet and a USB hub on it.

Coollllllll,  I didn't notice that.  I just looked at the plug coming out of it.  Nice feature.

Do you happen to know where a guy might be able to find a cord that will plug into the 12v outlet on that Milwaukee Power Source?  I have the batteries that it fits and this looks like it could be a great lightweight solution to power the lights in my flipover.  Thanks!

My lights should be here any day, along with the accessories.  I'm looking forward to this project.  Having two face forward (towards the fishing holes) and to face backwards (into the sled) is my planned configuration.  These, with the clam light stick already installed, should be more than enough light in all areas of my Clam Explorer.  Excited to not have to have lanterns and small lights clipped everywhere...then worry about batteries running out...

Snooped around Radioshack a little.  Here is one option that Ice Scratcher mentioned.  Buy a cord that has the dc jacks on it, cut one end off and crimp on a set of alligator clips.

I have bought them at Radio Shack before. I just took my converter in and they figured out which one would work. If you are planning on using it in a plastic Plano ammo box you will want the 90 degree adapter because it lets your batterys sit flat in the ammo box.

Like Shack Man said, just stop by the store and they will figure it out..

Lights are here, and they are very nice, very bright.  I plan to finish the install this weekend.  Two facing towards the ice holes and two back into the sled.

Im glad they came in for you coach. I thought they were pretty darn good looking also. They are going to be good for my power box project. You should post some pics to show them off when you get them finished. I am excited to see how they looked and worked for you..... Good luck!!!
