Thomson Lake 2017
« on: Jan 23, 2017, 11:47 AM »
It has been a very unproductive year for me so far this year.  Got the shack out on the ice on December 24th but never had much action.  Tried a few different locations before the new year and only a few hammer handles could be coerced into biting.
Had a few successful days on tip ups in the new year but hardly any action inside the shack so we were starting to get pretty discouraged with a bad case of the "januarys" (I always have a hard time catching fish in January).
Got back from holidays last week finally and decided i would put in a solid effort this past weekend.  Was rewarded with my first walleye of the season and it happened to be my largest ever through the ice!!  25.5x16" (online calculator determined it to be 8.7lbs) She was very fat and was released after a quick picture.  Ended the day with another nice 18" walleye and 8 pike from 2-5 lbs.
Yesterday was a slower day but we only fished mid-day for about 3 hours.  Caught 2-18" walleye and 2 small pike.  Lots of marks on the flasher but could not get them to take our offerings.
Ice was 24" under the shack but i havent drilled a hole outside for 3 weeks so im not sure what the ice away from the shack is like,  I imagine its at least that.  There are trucks and shacks everywhere.

We were there on the 14th and had a good day with lots of pike from 2-5lbs.  Almost all were on tip ups.

Better to report late, than never i suppose.  This past weekend didnt have alot of time spent fishing but the time that was spent was busy catching! We were only out fishing on Saturday from about 10:30 til 1:00.   I am happy to say i bettered my personal best pike through the ice now at just shy of 18lbs and 41" long.  Caught her on a perch colored "rattl'n'flyer".  Was very lucky that she was hooked right in the corner of the mouth to keep those teeth away from my 8lb test!

Between the two of us we iced 4 18-19" walleye and 3 other small pike during our time out.  Lots of marks on the screen kept us busy trying to get the walleyes to bite and they sure seemed to like that rattle in the lure once we figured it out.

The tipups were going off fairly steady when rigged up with "pickeral rigs" and minnows but we couldnt keep anything on as we were usually occupied by the flasher instead of consantly watching for flags.  Fun all the same because at least there were fish in the area.

Was a beautiful weekend temperature wise and i was kind of surprised by the amount of anglers on the ice, on Sunday.  I expected there to be alot more than we saw when we went on a quad tour.

Hopefully the bite continues through this cold snap!
