Who still uses Schooleys?
« on: Jan 11, 2016, 08:32 PM »
Who still uses Schooleys?  Past few years I have dusted off my old Schooleys and for the life of me can't remember why I ever put them away. The ease of use can't be beat and when out with the kids, no worries if they accidentally break one.

I kept all of mine but I'll stay with my spinning rigs with ultra light rods. The old ones served their purpose for me. I have learned not to abandon what is currently working well for me.

I'm a sucker for an ice fishing rod at a rummage sale. I have so many my wife wonders why I buy another at a rum. Seems like the schooleys have different flex's for the same length rod, some fast, some slow. I have taken the blank off the handle, tied different guides on, and used them for walleye fishing. When my grandson was young and would fish with me he caught a 13in perch on his schooley.

I exclusively use 'em for perch and pan fish, which consists of 90% of my fishing.  I figure that just because it's "old" technology, it doesn't mean they don't work.

I have both an 21" and 26" Schooley combos, plus a Schooley reel on a short ultra light rod. My primary rod is a Jason Mitchell Panfish with a CGI #8 inline reel. I keep different jigs on the Schooleys and will switch as the bite dictates. I fish out of a Frabil Recon and if I close it, then the shorter Schooley rods come in handy.

Every now and then for shallow late ice Perch, more of a nostalgia flashback than anything else. Still a highly effective rig that I grew up with and fun/different than modern stuff

I still use about 6 of them.  Just recently bought a black betty combo so time will tell if I make the switch. Its hard for me to break tradition when it still produces for me.

I use them too and they work great for panfish.
I had a good fight with a 3lb bass last fall.

I only use them on my tip downs. They basically are just line holders.
Look at me I can walk on water

Best rod hands down for crappie and light biting gills and even hard biting perch.  I even use the bobber on my trout rods for trout threw the ice..

bought a few for "loaners" so no one uses my good stuff. surprising how many people don't know how to use an open face reel still.

one of my friends fishes solely with one but doesn't reel it and walks backwards or hand pulls the line to land fish like many of the old school rods that have two L line keepers screwed in the wooden handles do.
i have tried fishing that way, but getting line out of chunks of ice to get back to fishing is no fun at all.

there is a schooley in my vehicle at all times tho! it's like a spare tire, just there in case it's needed lol.
