I know it early but trying to gets some ideas where to go. Live in northern Indiana last few years been up to Cadillac and Houghton lake. Looking for a few different places with cabin to rent. Thinking on going week after Christmas any help would be great.

Christmas is early for this but..
If Erie locks up good in OH waters, there ain't nothing like it in the world.. No cabins, but plenty of hotels...

St Germain Area of Northern Wisconsin. It's even better if there is little or no snow because this brings the winter cabin rental rates way down. There are only a couple of hundred lakes in that area so finding god active fish is never an issue. If there is a lot of Snow forget it.. the snowmobiles will mow you down but if your into them there is the ice drags early Jan. Nothing like doing 186 mph on a snowmobile on ice.

If you wanna have some fun and ice fish too then you should try Tip-up Town in Houghton Lake, MI. It runs for two weekends in the latter part of January. Tons of fun stuff to do, tons of snowmobiles and lots of fishing going on! If having lots of activity going g in bothers you while fishing then it definitely would not be for you!

You could hit Lake St Clair, they might have ice by then, depends on the weather. Not sure about cabins, but lots of hotels around and a cool ice fishing experience when we have an early ice season.

If it passes the ruler test, put it in the ice chest. Hook it and cook it.

What species are you after? Walleye and Perch - try Saginaw Bay. Plenty of hotels and some cabins. Pike - try Houghton Lake, Lake Trout - Higgins Lake. Smelt - Crystal Lake near Frankfort. Feel like driving to the U.P.? Try Little Bay de Noc for Pike, Walleye, and Perch. Good luck

Try your luck at landing an 8 pound plus steelhead on a tip up. Watch for my post as soon as there is safe ice. I am fishing the bays on Lake Huron near Saint Ignace in the UP. Once the ice gets good I move over to Lake Michigan waters.

If Pike is on your bucket list I would try Cedarville in the East UP. Bait is close to the fishing, Cabins are available, and the fish are plentiful

Bent's Camp on Mamie Lake of the Cisco Chain in Land O Lakes, WI. Good walleye, perch and pike fishing. Access to 3 WI/MI boundry water lakes or the entire chain with a MI license.

Last year we did a big Minnesota trip over New Years. Made the red-eye drive after work Friday all the way to Upper Red. We didn't do well there, but it was amazing fun. Next 2 days we hit Winnibigoshish and went full freestyle and used our fishing senses to read maps and put ourselves on fish. We killed'em! Definitely doing it again this year as soon as I get word that they have safe ice for ATV's.
Closer to home, I discovered Lake Winnebago and Poygan in Wisconsin. I ended up going a few weekends and completely fell in love. I live in NW Indiana, but I plan on making Bago/Poygan my home waters this season. At a 3hr drive, it's an easy weekend getaway. I've got a place that you can get rooms at $50/nt and they have kitchenettes.
If you're looking for additional info, PM me. I'll be making the Bago run every weekend
