Old Goat,

If I were you I would try to find one of last years plates (gen 4) so you don't have to take the chuck off the drill. plus there is something special this year in regards to the plates but for this your need last years plate ,which is the same this year, so nothing new with the plate it self but there is a add on to make it even better. I will explain more on the 25th as I can't release any info on new product until then.

I think I have the Gen 2 which was the last gen you had to take the chuck off. I like it and never take the drill off. For $100 for the bare tool its a cheap power head. Clam was also really cool and sent me a shaft for it so I can put the Milwaukee fuel drill on it with the 1200 in/lb torque....I might do it some day, but my 725in/lb drill or whatever it is works just fine on my 8in nils. $150 ($100 for tool, $50 for clam plate) for a power head is cheap.

Gen 1 to 3 were the ones that you had to take the chuck off the drill. Gen 4 (last years plate) was the first where you didn't take the chuck off.

So now that the new products are on clams website  I can explain my earlier comment. the new thing this year for the plate is a add on gear box that will allow you to run a 8 inch hand auger with the plate. so why I said to wait on getting a plate is because if you want to run a 8 inch auger then you will need to get a gen 4 plate (last years and also this years) and the gear box. the new gear box will only work on the gen 4 plates where you don't take the chuck off the drill. MSRP on the gear box is $69.99 and MSRP on the plate is also $69.99

here is the link to the new products this year. note there are a few items still missing but hopefully they will be added once shortly.

do you have a 5 inch auger already or are you going to buy one. also do you ever get over to Minnesota for the St Paul Ice Fishing Show. just wondering because I have a complete 5 inch set up I put together last season (gen 4 plate)(minus the drill) and never used it except for may be three test holes. I would give you a deal on it if you were able to meet up with me here in Minnesota. it has the extension on it too.

That sounds fantastic I have family there in the twin cities count me in on that. I found a frabill 5 that takes laser blades at a garage sale and is ready to rock and roll.

not sure about this...  i've got the plate which requires chuck removal on my m18 fuel 1st gen.  i've got 3 long hard seasons on it and pound lots of holes through +3ft of ice with my 8" finbore III.  also use the drill all summer in the shop.  not saying the gearbox isn't a good add on, but i'm getting by.

I can get blades for it anywhere, and sharpen them myself..

I have a couple ridgid drills that could probably do it to, but it would kill a battery awfully quick.. Not the best on the drill either. With a 2/1 ratio it's a walk in the park (all day long)

It's all about battery life with the drill setup.  I use a 6" lazer on a Milwaukee M18Fuel and even hole hopping in SD last year never ran out of battery on the second one.  But, an 8 inch has about twice the area to cut than a 6 inch, so it will take twice the juice to do the same work.  (8" = 50.24 square inches, 6" = 28.26 square inches).  The gear box will essentially make the drill feel the 8" hole like a 6" but with the gear reduction, will drill have as fast as without it.

I think it will be nice for bigger holes for sightfishing, etc, but I won't need nor use it for my 6 inch auger.

Great post Hookset!

Sometimes when I can't get the boat out, it's a two+ mile walk.. Most days like that I'll bring my 6 inch drill setup due to weight issues.. Even removed half the flights to make it even lighter..

I'd rather keep 4 pounders, but sometimes all we get are these...

And they really don't think they'll come up a 6 inch hole, although I convince them anyway.. I'd much rather fish for them out of an 8 inch hole..
