whats the shallowest you would fish for bows.
« on: Mar 11, 2016, 09:54 AM »
while drilling holes looking for the 1-2 ft depths I managed to bottom out  on a few holes where there was only 6 inches of water under the ice to the sand. I was near a brook trying to get as close as possible. I tried it out beacuse the hole was drilled but i worried about line getting hung up on bottom if a fish ran off with the bait. whats your cut off point? ive gone as shallow as a foot but anything less seems foreign to me.

I prefer to be in 2 to 6ft.

But sometimes when drilling holes and "guessing" how deep I am... Occasionally it's only 6-12" inches. I have dropped eggs anyway and caught rainbows in just inches of water.

X 2.
Wayne, the other day I "was guessing" and when cleaning out the hole had 5-6" of water.
When I'm drilling shallow, I'm a lot more conscience of pulling out  ;) then drilling down.
In other words, as soon as it sounds just a little different I'm ready to put the brakes on.
I should say the M18 and blue Nils require absolutely no down pressure for me. It's just pull the trigger and steer.

You know I can be a mud bug..it depends on ice thickness.and proximity to the shore and pinch points  ..this week most of my fish including the brookie were. Caught in about18" of water. ..given my  druthers I'd rather fish in deep  water...btw..I got 2 slime darts in ankle deep water. ..at least I got away from the smallies!

If a fish can swim sideways to it I'll fish it

also I will add, I've caught 5 pounders in 8" and in 40 ft. But for the most part the heavyweights come from deep or just adjacent to the drop. But you gotta cover all spectrums while your there and adjust accordingly and Make it happen

I had a 18''-20'' brookie today slam a 8'' brookie in a foot of water today. Would have been the fish of the year.... And it was a holdover, not a broodstock (this water only gets fingerlings). Couldn't believe the size of this fish given the biggest brookie I have ever taken out of this water was 12''. Darn it.  ::)

Nice so you had the smaller brookie on and the bigger one came in? That's  cool go back next year.

I don't really see much reason to go less then 2 feet of water under the hole. I've caught bigger bows fishing live baits over deeper water in most places anyway.
