old wives tales?
« on: Feb 03, 2006, 11:36 PM »
Kept hearing people say that to keep mice away I should put mothballs or softner sheets in my shack.Well I had mice in the house so I thought I would try this.I put a bowl of moth balls and some softner sheets under the counter and set a mouse trap between them.close enough together you coulda put a paper plate over all of them. guess what, I have caught 3 mice in that trap.Hmmmmmm

Went to visit my brother on his farm and stayed in his guest room that was seldom used.  Well, all night I heard rustling sounds, so the next day we set traps and nailed 5 mice in 3 hours.  I now know that peanut butter works better than cheese, any time of day!  ;D

The mothballs used to be the way to keep mice from nesting in your shanty when you store it up in the garage but the smell reminds me of grandma's house and
never seems to go away.  That's why the dryer sheets work a whole lot better.  They
don't scare mice but they won't make a nest in your shack.  Good tip, not an old wive's tail.

We use softner shhets in our cabin but only regular bounce works and you have to use a lot of it, no other brands  seem to have any effect.

solution to mice in the shanty
Put a little  <oil> of peppermint on some cotton balls and put them at point of entry .
I found this in a home and garden book a couple of years ago and use it myself .
Though I didn't have mice when I started to use it I still haven't seen any sign of any rodents in or around my yard , shed, garage or house .
Its important to use the oil not extract .
