More whitefish
« on: Mar 17, 2016, 11:20 AM »
Well my personal best was this year so far at 100 whitefish caught and around 92 released. Got a few 20 and 21 inchers wich are the big boys around here. Great times and hope next year is as good. Heading out all next week I'm sure there will be a few pic's.. ;D

Had someone else with me that's why there are 4 laying there.. :)

VERY NICE!    :icefish:

I figured you were over 100 before now! You musta been slacken!  ;)

I’m looking forward to seeing you next adventures! :icefish:

I may have to try coming up and trying some open water whitefish. I bet a couple places might work. Be fun trying anyway! I’m gonna start researching that on the more whitefish water.

Well all I can tell ya is good luck catching them after ice out. They are there just harder to stay on them in one spot as you know light bite to set the hook. Conditions would have to be about perfect to get on them.Whitefishlover and I tried last spring and he did get one up to the  boat but lost it. And that was trying all day. :-\

I’m wondering if fishing shallower areas might work. I’m gonna research it a little. I know that for crappie in winter you need small presentation with a little meat on it. As soon as temps warm, they get more aggressive. Larger presentations with no meat work best. Looking at the vids from youtube, got me thinking about it. There would need to be a concentration of fish and fairly shallow water, I think. I talked to a guy on the ice there who said he had good luck catching them on open water. Jigging just like in winter he said. He got kind of glazed over talking about it and not terribly informative.  ::)

I have heard of guys getting the bigger ones up on Chamberlain, Eagle, Indian, etc while trolling.  I got into them one Spring at Allagash Lake near the Ranger's shack one evening with my fly rod.  They were hammering an elk hair caddis on the surface, it was awesome, but that was a lot of years ago and the only time I have done that.

I've seen a couple Canadian guys slay them fishing at night while vertically jigging deep pools with shrimp meat. It's something I've been wanting to do ever since I saw it.
