Fly fishing wire leader
« on: Feb 20, 2006, 07:54 PM »
Hey guys:
I have a ton of wire leader that I use for fly-fishing when I target Bluefish, I was wondering if anyone has ever used this type of leader or not? I have to believe that it won't hinder the bait's swimming action since it is made to be cast with a fly on the other end. Plus it is knottable, so I won't have any huge snaps connected to the hook? What do you guys think?

Oh yeah, what about this idea: three feet of 25lb flouro, connected to a 6 inch shot of wire? Is that too short? Just an idea.

You have to 2 options:
You can wake and fish, or you wake up and watch people fish.

Don't use wire, use 15 - 20 pound stren high impact or P - line fluorocarbon leader. You will rarely get bit off and it will get you a lot more fish than wire. Even the thinnest wire stands out like a sore thumb, and fluoro is completely invisible underwater.
Politically incorrect, and proud of it.

I am a new fluoro convert, but I used the tieable leader (Tygerwire, I think) in the past with good success.

Malin Boa No-Kink Titanium wire. Far better than any super braid, steel, wire, fluoro or mono. I would love to fish side by side with you fluoro/mono fans. Come to Ft. Peck lets year and lets do it.

thats right. remember the only reason this stuff was developed, is because it dissolves in water, low visability is just a bonus

LuisT-
What is the brand name?  I have used a tyeable wire in the past that was designed fly fishing.  I used it for ling cod in the salt and later brought it with on a trip fishing kings, bullet tuna, and queenfish.  Easy to use and not bad on fish.  Most of the tieable fly leaders are thin enough not to sweat in most lakes, rivers etc....  Except if your targeting fish in gin clear water?  Use a good fluorocarb or mono leader.  Oh yeah, the leader material i used did have a tendancy to kink after a healthy pike!  Good luck  - Barleydog

Hey Grump...I didn't get the IITV comment you copied on this post, but I'm assuming he makes comments on wire versus flouro like this based on what??  Using a camera underwater and looking at both wire and flouro??  Don't those cameras have lights on them??  I can see a light shining on wire making it stand out versus flouro/mono, but last time I checked the pike didn't have flashlights or LED's with them...and I'd guess at 20 foot down they're not going to see much in clear water or "murky" stuff like we have our skinny fish swimming around in up here around Canada anyway....Esox...

Yeah, but the pike that do bite you off are the big ones. Try cortland toothy critter or 18lb sevenstrand uncoated, its not bad stuff. My sore thumb wire has caught me alot of biggies. I have been bitten off by fish boatside with florocarbon a few times and I dont trust it. Its fine if they get hooked in the lip, but if the lure is back in their mouth, you know.

i fish fireline at times for toothies and in weeds. both hard and soft water and fly fishing. works especially well fly fishing for bass and others in weeds. the fireline cuts though the weeds insted of the weeds just clumping on the line while fighting the fish. i find it extreemely tough. no problems w/ bite offs. can be hard to cut on purpose without a knife thats sharp. just be cautious of grabing the fireline with a fish on. the line can cut you good (why do you think it sheds weeds so well?).
hope this helps.
tight lines.

I use superline for bass too. There are so many hammerhandle pike around here, and you catch them right along with the bass. I end up losing too much tackle to the little buggers when I fish mono. Ive never had a baby northern bite off spiderwire. Big northens though, can and will bite off superlines, they rake it on their teeth and thats it. They swim away.
