Going light?
« on: Jan 18, 2016, 10:02 AM »
So what does that mean to you.  On early ice, before I can take the snowmobile out, im packing up my jet sled and walking....this past weekend, i realized, I take too much stuff.....Just because I have a boat back full of ice fishing lures, jigs, etc....doesnt mean i need to take it all on the ice....I may have switched jigs 5 times over two days.  So leave the big bag in the car and just pack a couple small boxes that fit in pockets?  I hauled 5 tip ups out and only used 1.  Im never that far from the truck so if I needed something, like running out of a secret jig, I could always walk back.....When traveling 'light'.....what do you take, leave back, etc......Im tired of hauling too much stuff.....

first ice/ thin ice, spud bar and a bucket with my flasher, 2 rods, small box of jigs in my pocket and bait in my pocket.
Funniest thing about ice fishing for me is when people who know nothing about ice activities try to warn me about the dangers of the ice...

Going light for me usually means I'm just going jigging for panfish and I want to be mobile. I don't bring my gas auger or shelter or tip ups big cooler and food and propane heater and such. I only bring my small sled with my 6" hand auger, spud bar, 2 scoops, 2-3 rods, flasher, tackle box, and bucket of random junk which is also my seat. I always bring all my tackle so I don't need to go back to the truck, I wouldn't want to have to walk back to get something if I'm on a hot bite. And you really don't know sometimes what color is going to be the hot color, and if that color happens to be in the truck then you might never use it that day. If you haven't done so already, you can cut down on the amount of tackle you carry by how you organize it. Definitely separate boxes for all your tip up gear. Separate boxes for panfish jigs and bigger lures is also a good idea

Traveling Light with Max Lucado.

Oops I mean two poles, a small box of lures and plastics, a little ice scooper, sled, bucket with seat cover, auger, flasher.  That's about  it, and sun shades.  Don't want snow blindness.

If it doesn't fit in this, it doesn't go. Loaded, with my Vex, less than 30 lbs. Pulls like it's not there.

depends if I am fishing for pike in warm weather 30*f-10*F light wind under 10 mph  or if I am fishing for crappie/ gills in cold weather like 10*F degrees and less with wind up to 20 mph  ...situation dependent

situation one:

2 jigging rods
2 tip ups will use only one jigging rod if I have two tip ups out :state law
two ice scoops I use the plastic one they always break.
small box of ice jigs and tip up stuff...
flasher
one 1lb bottle of propane
one sport cat heater.
auger
spud in hand
and my one man shanty weights about the same as a jet sled so why not just bring it....
one pack of hand warmers and one pack of body warmers... open  ready to warm me up...
phone in two zip lock freezer bags.
gps it goes around my neck..
and the warm clothes I wear
ice safety picks around neck...

in the car is warm clothes encase I fall in after the car is not heated up yet

that all I bring I could weight the sled and gear but it not needed for sure under 100 lbs...with the shanty at 45 lbs

situation two:::

after I have checked the ice well with a spud prior to going out  I go light some times with just tip ups weather dependent:

bait with bait bucket in right hand..

on the auger handle in the left hand is a bucket:

in a bucket is:
pocket knife...
ice scoops for clearing out the hole...
hand warmers the disposable kind a few bottle of water or soda...
bucket lid seat from nepa out doors the infusion bucket seat lid....
lighter if needed...
gps if needed...
tip ups frabill round kind three of them...
flash lite...

in side my tip up tackle for tip ups is:
depth finders
hooks.
leaders.
flag lights.
depth stops bobbers mini ones.

if I fish fir gills for tip ups I bring one rod in bucket and minus out a tip up and add a small box of jig and some spikes or waxies and split shot

besides the clothes I wear I have a set of ice pick I ware around my neck just in case I fall threw even after I checked...

This is my light setup.  I'm with rgfixit's mentality...If it doesn't fit in my Jet Sled Jr, it doesn't go.

Carcajou = Wolverine
Blessed and thanking God I can do this ice fishing thing...
