Seen a odd ice thing today
« on: Jan 07, 2016, 06:05 PM »
My boy showed me a vid of ice on st George down in liberty, maine. Looked like about 4-5 inches of black ice but it had a crack line that was rising and falling ! hard to explain without seeing it. Hope he puts vid on here.
Is it ice time yet???

Was there a wind creating that shift in the ice?

Usually on a windy day the water will move up and down in the hole.

I saw that happening on Sebago once but it was going up and down very slowly. Nothing like that

Fluctuation  in the water level after a cold spell causes the ice to crack and move up and down from the lower water levels when the pressure and strain on the ice causes it to break it causes a bounce that can spread over the whole lake. I have seen it on Sebago after a cold spell that freezes the lake shut after a few days .extreme cold drys up the water flow faster than most realize.

6 yrs. ago was up to Rockwood on the last weekend of the season and the stress crack was 15" wide in the morning and 3"-4" at noon but it was moving up and down like the video and we were drilling through 26"-30" one side would be up then then a few min. later the other side would be up. Couldn't understand why and still can't.

about 12 yrs ago i was fishing square at limestone pt. there was a 4ft. high pressure ridge there off the point crossing the whole lake. about noon time the whole 4ft. collapsed into the lake starting 20yrds beside me moving across the lake ! the water in my closest flag hole pumped my flag out of the hole onto the ice!  i almost crapped myself! the ice kept flexing for almost 2 min. till' all of the pressure ridge collapsed across the lake! damned scary! felt like a earthquake!

Reminds me of a story my friend's father always told about a pressure ridge on Moosehead. ..  he said the ice started rumbling like an earthquake,  and suddenly there were chunks of ice the size of refrigerators and cars thrusting up !
We had to ride 2 miles , all the way to the shore of an island on Moosehead, to get around a huge pressure ridge.   It was 6 and 8 ft high.

One year I was building a house on Rangeley Lake when the pressure ridge formed. The noise and the echos from the mountains south of the lake were so loud I thought a plane might have crashed and I was hearing the explosion. I learned the next day that the pressure ridge was almost 3/4 of a mile from where I waswhen it happened.
