New to Ice Fishing, New to Forum
« on: Jan 04, 2016, 03:06 PM »
New to the forum, but so far it looks like there will be tons of good info on here for me to learn from!  This past week I was able to go ice fishing for the first time.  We went to Granite Res, and 2 of us caught our limit of trout.  Needless to say, I am hooked.  I have since then invested about $150 in my own gear (the wife is THRILLED! ::)).  I am very excited for my next outing!!!

Oh. I'm sure $150 isn't much.  That amounted to a new rod/reel/line, a few Rapala's, a jig and weight set, bobbers, and some ice cleats.  The buddy that got me hooked has most of the other stuff, luckily.  I am excited toget my collection growing.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  This brings me to my first question.....
Everyone I've talked to just seems to automatically know how to tell the ice depth (due to experience, I'd assume).  Can you all shed some light on how one can tell ice depth, what to look for, what to steer clear of?

Thanks!

The hole cleaner/chipper I use has a ruler on it. Do I just hook the scoop under the ice and look at the mark that is on the top of the ice.
