Bait trapping
« on: Dec 30, 2015, 10:44 AM »
Hello all,

Just wondering how everyone is doing this year trapping? It's taken me 2 years to find a good location. I've only managed to catch them with rod and reel with a tiny hook with little ball of bread. I've set traps overnight but I manage to only get crayfish!? What am I doin wrong? Let there be ice!

Going Friday.  Will chum with crackers then nail them with the throw net!  Rod and reel for larger goldens as well.  If it all works out a years worh of pike bait will be had!

Try placing trap at different levels in the water column.

When I trapped I used dry dog food for bait. Try different depths and different spots in the same water body. I was trapping when the ice had formed on the ponds so it was easy to set traps right above the weeds.

Not legal for inland waters

I didnt mention what location this would be happening.

After doing a quick check Bojango your information is incorrect

Additionally as stated in the baitfish laws:  321 CMR 4.01 section E

"...by a single circular net not exceeding 6' in diameter..."

Those are saltwater regs, here are the inland rules, it seems as long as "circular" net can be interpreted as a cast net and it does not exceed 6 foot in diameter it's legal

I saw and fixed my post.  My net is 6'.  Any larger and throwing them becomes expert level if you ask me!

I can barely get a 6 footer to open right.  Good skill to have though.

Did really well late October. Had enough and stopped. Been using them up open water so set the trap in two different spots for a day a piece last weekend and only managed to get three dozen. I have a hard time when it gets cold,  some people do better when it ices over. (goldens)

Didn't know they even sold cast nets that small! Would ya mind sharing where ya picked it up? Might have to grab one for myself. Anyways my mistake, I was referring to the regs for your home state.

They are so available you can even find them at Walmart.  Amazon has a few as well as does Bass Pro.  All 6'  Mesh size varies.

Just picked one up at dicks sporting goods in Plymouth, little pricey but it's made by eagle claw and looks pretty durable. I let everyone knows how it works, any tips?

Yes throw the net 1000 times before you go.  It is not as easy as it looks by any means!  They are indespensible tools though.

Prepare to get a little wet, turn your back to the water and throw over your shoulder. Practice practice practice

Got to my shiner spot check my trap and practice my cast netting, getting pretty good. On a down note my brand new Stihl chainsaw(which I had in the back of my truck, was planning on cutting firewood after) was stolen off to the police station to file a report. Wat a great way to start my new year.

Look into seine minnow nets.... The law prohibits a rectangle net larger than 36 square feet...I bought a 6x4 (24 is less than 36) I'll never use the wire minnow trap again, what you wanna do is find a farm pond or something small and shallow and put your waders on. Not only is it fun but it does save you a few bucks after the net investment, no offense to the baits hops but bait ain't cheap. Once you get the hang of it it's not so bad
Flaaaaaaaaaaaag!!!!!!!!!!!
