Perch in 30'+
« on: Jan 17, 2006, 07:27 AM »
Can anyone give a little info on icefishing in deeper water.  Rigs, methods, getting that tiny jig to the bottom in a timely manner.  Anything would help.  I fish well in water under 20' but horrible at deepr depths.  Thanks

Take the hooks off a small sweedish pimple.Tie a short piece of line on split ring.Tie your jig on other end and bait. Lower it to where fish are the pimple will draw them in and they will take baited jig.                 Ron

I use a hali in the same manner.  ;D If legal in NY ...I use 2 jigs on one line when I'm fishing for gills here in Iowa. Heavier jig on the bottom and a flatter jig on top with 6-8 in. between. Top jig tied so hook is up ;)

If you dont want larger jigs but  smaller ones...Wolfram jigs are fairly heavey for their size and will get you down quick

genz worm works well for me tipped with a waxxie or spike. show up good on vex and gets down there fairly quick. also its horizontal and ive found they work better when the bite is tough.

yep for NY, I would use a double rig, with a pimple or larger forage minnow and a little jig just a few inches up.
I was over 20FOW yester day and it seemed like they wanted the higher, small jig. But, the bigger perch I caught was on the bigger, bottom jig with a mealworm.

Silver Swedish pimple with minnow or minnow head.  If you've never fished em this deep be prepared to keep most if not all of them.  They cough up their stomachs.  And I'm sure someone is going to jump on this and say you can just puncture them and the fish will swallow them back down.  But I wonder how many of them have actually proven it works.  Sure the fish swims away but does it live?

Is that their stomach?  or an air bladder?  I have caught walleyes from 30+ fow and they had that happen.  Those fish went into the pan...
Personally, I can't see how pucturing it will allow them to live.  Some one with more knowledge please correct me if I am wrong...

In deep water perch fishing I like to use a horizontal jig on the bottom tied with
a loop or a small snap so it can rock.  Up about a foot I tie on a second jig on a loop
to keep it away from the main line.  Longer skinny jigs work best here.  Once you
locate a school of perch if all you are getting is dinks, try working 2' to 4' above them
as bigger perch are more aggressive and will rise to check out your offering.

the air bladder pushes the stomach out.

but popping it, seems like that we kill the fish.
putting a hole in your stomach or air bladder, just doesn't some good.  :(

Thanks again everyone all your suggestions really help...I will use them as soon as this lousy western NY weather gets cold.  We had ice early and now everytime it freezes up again it get warm and rainy.
