Beware..ICE
« on: Mar 31, 2015, 03:23 PM »
Fished Bailey pond (sterling) the last two days.  This morning had 9" of ice. ( 3" "punky ice" and the other 6 black.)  While picking up(1pm) my leg goes thru the ice.  My buddy thinks its an old hole.  I leave and he calls me at 4pm and says he fell through 2 times about 50 yards from shore. He was lucky to get out.  Guess I will be getting the boat ready tomorrow instead of ice fishing!

Ponds will go out quickly, lakes take a little longer,,After this weekend not many if any lakes will be safe in Ct. Most of us hard core guys have put our gear away last week its just not worth risking your life over. If you do go do not go alone.

I'm done for this year.  I regret not making my buddy get off the ice with me at 1pm.  Not sure if i could have talked him off anyways.  Just glad he is ok!

i really ought to figure out a way to move my kayak around on the ice with me in it
better weight distribution and if i go through   i dont really get wet and i float
would make the transition from hard to soft water much smoother

and Batterson's low!-Wow!-Although after hitting up Winchester+burr sunday-I wouldn't say18-19" of ice is foolish to fish on.- wasn't even beginning to slush up on top.- snow blew across both ponds that day-this weekend will be the last weekend I can effortlessly walk onto the ponds w/ solid edges-
I'll hit burr Friday w/ cousin+ brother in the rain+maybe repeat or winch on Saturday- both are still locked solid!

Better safe than sorry is one way to look at it. I am not a "no guts no glory " guy by any means. However, there is no substitute for common sense and good judgement. There are still some excellent ice conditions in Ct. and elsewhere. In my opinion there is nothing foolish about seeking these opportunities.

Only people who are not experienced in late ice make such comments.  We know your itching to get the boat out but do yourself a favor.  If you dont like late ice, or apparently the guys fishing it.  Find somewhere else to post.

I think this person has a right to his opinion, but if what he is saying is that HE has fallen through the ice 6 times and all he has learned from this is that you don't go ice fishing this time of year (I don't know how long he has been ice fishing, but he IS an ice shanty rookie) I would let him stick to his opinion for his own safety.
