Fish by the numbers
« on: Mar 17, 2015, 12:48 PM »
How many fish and what size of fish do you think are in a given body of water?

In a 500 acre lake would you expect 1000 bass and 1 over 8 lbs?

In a mile stretch of river would you expect 5 Walleye and 1 over 20 inches?

In Pymatuning for instance, do you think there is a 50 lb cat fish?

This stuff is tuff to make a call on and even harder to prove, but I thought it might be fun to see what people think...

Is there a Crappy so big out there it can't fit in your bucket?

There are a few oddball fish in every lake.  50lb cat in Pymatuning, I wouldn't doubt it.

I beleive that a 50# cat is out of the question. To much pressure.  I would equate a 50# cat to a 3 # blue gill.  Just isn't going to happen.

i have got a 52 inch musky from pyme and countless eyes over 26 inches recently. I get 20lb cats and i dont target them either. most of the big fish get taken out but I take a pic and set them on their way. And for crappies I had one that took the whole bottom of the bucket and was bent. I just wonder about the perch there?

I think a 3# blue gill could exist.

Any chance there is a 30 inch Small Mouth in PA?

. First I would think that there are  a lot of fish that may be larger in size than all of these discussions. Think about how much waters there are in the State of PA. A lot of waterways are not accessable to the public for one reason or another.
I Live in SE PA and have several pictures of catties from our local waters into the 40lb range. I also know of at least 2 50lb cats caught in the waters in or around Montgomery County but have been asked to not put the pictures up on our Montgomery County Anglers web site or our Clubs Facebook page. Both fish were released so they are still maybe around. I would guess that big waters will have big fish. Between the Delaware, Schuykill, Susky and other big waters of western PA there are some BIG fish. The big crappie that was caught this year was from a waterway with "restricted access". I doubt it would have been caught if the place did not allow ice fishing and access to the better fishing areas on that body of water. Lots of quarries in PA that are off limits for fishing.
Just my opinion on big fish in the Keystone State. Lets all hope that there are bigger fish and that one day we may be lucky enough to drop a line on that lunker!  ;D

I have two seasons, Ice season and catfish season.  I travel all over western pa looking for those monster flatheads, and in my opinion there are cats up to 60lbs in Pa rivers.  I have caught them ounces from the state record and one that we didn't weigh, that was 44.5" long and 34" girth, same length but 4" rounder than the current state record.  I have devoted 25 years of my life to finding a 50# and they are there for sure.  Pymie has some big cats but the Allegehny, ohio, mon, skuke, susky, delaware rivers are on fire for cats, and thats where I am looking for that true animal!  Here is a vid of the flat I caught that was physically larger than the state record but my scale batteries were dead that night and there was no way I was keeping this fish to weigh it and having it possibly die.  There are record fish out there even though there is more fishing pressure than ever.

I watched that video, that is an awesome fish! I agree the rivers in PA are the places your going to find those freakishly big fish.. some of it is so hard to get to,  The Connoquenessing in Western PA has a few giant holes that you never see anyone fish, mainly because you would have to kayak through really ruff water or scale down near vertical walls, those are the kind of places I think you could find a Monster Cat fish.. Some big monster that's about 20 years old filling up on creek chubs day after day.. and when the occasional bass fisherman does hook him, he breaks off with ease

Any river known for walleyes has 50 per mile I bet, though they are all concentrated in certain water with good habitat

30" smallie no way Jose.  I'd say Lake Erie holds a 26 or 27 incher tops

Definitely a 60# Musky lurking somewhere in PA.  Probably a big lake where they aren't targeted much like Kinzua or Raystown

Have seen pictures of crappie over 20".

Lots of lakes have the potential to break the state record for perch, and I would venture that the state record will be broken again by an ice fisherman in the next 10 years.

I am going to fish for some pike in the spring, the ones we catch are pretty small... about 23-30 inches...

I have been using 80 lb braid as my leader and it works well, but I heard fluorocarbon is the way to go.. any suggestions on what pound test? I will be fishing with shiners and regular hooks about 5 ft - 10 ft off shore in a few feet of water

I doubt if there's 50lb cat in Pymy, because I think they just have channels, not flat heads. As for 18-20 inch perch NO. I all the state record perch only 4 states recorded a perch of 16 inches.30 small no way, I could see a new musky, and flathead record. I believe there's 18-19 inch crappie and huge flats out of the river systems. As for eyes a lot of10-12 lb fish in Erie, but the Allegheny river might hold the big one. That upper stretch of the Beaver river is a small mouth Mecca.
