I have both an Aqua-Vu and a Vex. If you dont have a Vex I would tell you to definately get a vex over the Aqua-Vu but the Aqua-Vu is also a very nice tool, I just think you can get more out of a Vex. It also depends on what kind of lakes you usually fish, if they are stained water than the camera will not help much but if the water is fairly clear you can locate structure and fish fairly easily. If you are looking for this tool to help with jigging you will learn much more with the vex(how to jig when the fish are finicky, where the fish are in the water column, ect) Good Luck with your choice, you cant go wrong with either of them.

bigbig is rite the vex is more versitile I also have both the only time I liked the aqua view over the vex is when I fish realy shallow weedy ponds you can watch your jig go into the weeds and manipulate it so it doesnt get tangled but that is one pond I fish Ive had a vex since 2000 and caught a lot of fish with it that I wouldnt have without it I would go with the vex for a first purchase  ;D

I've done alot of reading and on the topic and have decided to buy a Marcum instead of a vexilar. But I agree, a flasher is a better tool if you had to choose between the two. If you do get an Aqua - Vu, try to get the model that rotates 360degrees - will save you alot of effort! - Porter

Jeff, which Marcum model do you go with?  I have been looking into the flasher idea but probably won't do anything until next season.  I still not convinced I do that much jigging to warrant the decision.  Thought if I worked on more jigging this season maybe I'll do it next season.  Hope you have a great time up north.

Gonna buy me a vex at the end of the season when they get clearanced. Already have the Aqua-Vu. Used Rons vex and it is a great tool can watch the fish approach the bait helps in setting the hook. Nice to know if there are fish down the hole and the vex is easy to set up and read. I use my camera mostly in the summer to see what is under the lilypads or submerged brush. Both are excellent tools ;D

Jimmy and Keith,

I'm going with the Marcum LX5 - the absolute very best flasher on the market. It has no interference form other flashers/electronics, has a digital battery status indicator, comes in a weatherproof neoprene case, has the most simple recharge method (just plug into the wall), and has the strongest signal  - and that is what you want. It can switch from shallow to deep sonar with one switch and you can zoom into specific depth ranges to target specific species (perch, crappie). Sorry for the advertisement on the LX5, but I've really read alot about it vs. the Vexilar and have spoken to several die hard fisherman (from MN) on the phone and they all say - hands down, the best.  Heading to Vermont tomorrow - wish me luck!!! - Porter

Roncarr,
I will - it arrives tomorrow & will charge it up tomorrow night. I'm not really a "techie" type of person, but since I love to jig - this item is really supposed to help you in all types of water (clear/stained, etc.) and species (walleye, perch, bass, crappie). I also have read alot about their underwater cameras - they are expensive (don't get me wrong, Marcum is not cheap), but they really have alot of the features some Aqua Vu owners ask for (i.e. more visability, 360 degree rotation, etc.) - Porter

Jeff, I read all the same things on the forums that I searched.  Sounds like a great unit.  I was interested in the same model.  Why is it the best things are always the most expensive?  I will probably wait to next year to get one.  Catch me a big one.  Will be waiting for the flasher report.  My, that doesn't sound good....Jeff gives a report on his flasher activities.  Thought this was a family site.  Have fun in VT.  Looks like some of us are heading out to Moosehorn this weekend.

Someone had an aqua viewer out on chauncey a couple weeks ago. I was glued to the screen for like an hour and a half. I even missed a couple of my flags. Some of the time I had like 4 or 5 bluegill looking at my jig but they wouldn't bite it. I would change the jigging technique a little bit and they would start pounding the jig. Makes me wonder how many other times I think there are no fish around in reality they could be down there looking at the jig. I also caught a nice pickerel on the jig. It came out of nowhere at an incredible speed and nailed my jig and kept going. One minute my jig is on the screen and the next there is a large torpedo shaped object briefly flying across the screen and then my rod bends all the way down. I also had a small bass take the jig but I couldn't set the hook.
I have to get one of these cameras for next year.

Thats is the coolest part about the camera;s. On my first outing with the camera I turned awy from the screen for a few second only to look back at a dark screen...then slowly spots came into view...there was a nice pike just sitting in front of the camera, then he turned and swam away..very cool

I fish a shallow weedy lake the best thing about it is bieng able to manipulate your jig not to get caught in the weeds you can make it go through the weeds without getting tangled and see fish deep in the weeds I use it in down view helps for jiggin in places like this its better than the vex my opinion
