Middle River fishing
« on: Jan 19, 2015, 07:57 AM »
I fished the cove by Martin's and Wilson Point and caught small perch and gills. Several other fishermen as well. Fun and the ice was ok. Gets thinner when you head out further.

Appreciate the info.  I have two Q's
(1) Did you enter the ice off Dark Horse Rd (Kingston Pt Park)?
(2) Did you need a plank to get on the ice?
Thanks in advance---spur

Let me introduce you two.  MTGrant meet my friend from my MD days Spurcollector (Mr. T).  Spur meet MTGrant from my wild west days in Bozeman.  You guys are both crazy nimrods.  You guys need to get together and fish.  Let me know when that happens and I will join you if at all possible.

Soooooounds like a winner to me----thanks Jig Jig.  Mtgrant, I'm 55 minutes from middle River---the closest ice for me.  Next closest ice is Greenbriar--about an hour and 20 minutes away. If this warm wx doesn't mess things up, maybe we can meet up at Martin's Lagoon simetime.  I have not completely discounted DCL this weekend--depends on what some out of town friends do. We'll b in touch---spur

Please be careful at the Lagoon..... looks like active dredging and open water around the seaplane ramp, as of Saturday. Saw those folks on the little cove and got pumped, but I have concerns dredging could act as a giant ice eater farther out.  Unknown...be safe and hope to see you out there soon.

Fred,

Are you going to give it a try? I thought about going yesterday, charged up the MarCum, looks like it's time for a new battery.

I fished it twice in the evening. No bites until 5. Then good yellow perch until dark. If you are on top of your rod and organized, you can limit out. Today it is sleeting so I may not go. Cold a crap!! My hands about froze. Hand warmers are a must. Didn't think I needed them last nite but I was wrong. About 15 guys on the ice. 5+ inches. I saw a few catch a couple fish. The herons were trying to steal my catch. Park at Dark Head point and walk out. Cleats are a good idea. Guys were also walking over from Wilson Point Park.
I was using wax worms and rapalas along with swedish pimples. You needed spring bobbers on the rod tip to see the soft bites. Single hooks worked best and made it easier to take off the fish. I just took a bucket, 2 rods and a minimum of gear. Next time I will take my sled if the ice holds up.
I talked to a guy the other day who said the bite was good in the morning until 10 or so. Best when the tide is moving. Nothing on the dead tide.
They were also talking about guys ice fishing at a quarry on the Gunpowder? Not sure where they are talking about. Supposedly getting crappies there.

Interesting thread. I'm a friend of Jig's. Will be targeting trophy sized gills at Dcl this weekend. Send me a pm & I'll show you some spots.

I caught really nice bluegills at Sheppard Meyers lake in Pa. earlier this season. Crappies, bass and perch with Jig. I think they closed it now for trout season. Too bad they don't let you fish for trout through the ice. In Montana that was my specialty.
