Picked a good year to build a Smitty Sled!
« on: Feb 22, 2015, 09:15 PM »
I was able to use a bunch of aluminum "T" bar I had laying around and the parts that went with it... All I had to buy was the ring bolts to tie into... I might have been able to make it taller, but it still made my old Clam Scout (that is always stuffed full of stuff), much easier to pull! I can still sit on my chair, if I don't "flip" the tent over and it weighs about 17 lbs...

It doesn't come apart, but I drive a pick up and it sits on top of my clam....

Alan, nice work.  If you flip it over will the clam fit inside for transport?  I want to do one for next year and my strategy will be to fit everything so it can fit inside for transport.  I have a hard tonneau cover on the truck so it has to fit inside of each other.

That 80/20 extruded aluminum is the BALLS....love that stuff. Handyman erector set material. I always snag the scrap at work and it has come in handy for many projects....good stuff but expensive to buy.

It is all scrap that I have grabbed at work! Great stuff... I love how light it come out and still will hold the Clam and my weight...

As for "nesting" together, I made it to long, but that was so I could mount a bucket holder later...

Smitty's are where its at.  Sure has helped us on LG.  I'm gonna get one for next year...it will have over 140hp and a track on the back!  No more walking 6 miles on these huge lakes towing my gear by hand!

Nice design Alan.  One suggestion...make it higher.  Some spots in Western mass you'd still be plowing snow with that.  Here is the one we use on LG...

I thought of going higher, but I wanted to be able to use my seat with out taking it off the smitty. I have pulled it through snow much higher than the "raisers" and it still pulled great. I also have no issue  or worry about it falling over, even on uneven ground... Like mentioned before with the 80/20 extruded aluminum, it is easy to make changes and if I find I am plowing snow instead of riding up on top, out comes the Ellen wrench!

The one pictured sadly has tipped over a few times but it was more a case of over packing than a fault of it's design!

This weekend the JS1 with shappel runners pulled nicely.  I do need to integrate skis with the otter.
