Suggestions for a first time 6 year old on ice?

Taking a six year old out for first time on ice.  Any suggestions on where to go on east side of Rochester?  Need some fun action to get him excited about it.

Don't know if Canadarago is too far but it's great for plenty of dink perch just off shore in 4 ft of water-- great for small kids

If you can get your hands on an underwater camera, it will keep a youngun's attention for quite a while.

Conesus

Conesus - North end off of Vitale Park.  Heated and clean bathrooms at the park before you walk out.  Walk out to 8 to 10 FOW.  Fish for bluegills on tiny jigs with spikes. The fish should be there and bite...they will be small, but numerous and keep the kid busy.  He doesn't care how big they are, just as long as he is catching fish.  The kid will have a great time!   Just remember, bring warm clothes for the kid, hot chocolate, cookies, hot dogs/buns, other drinks.   Definitely bring a shanty, heater, if you have a camera bring that too.  Don't forget EXTRA pairs of gloves....kids LOVE to get their gloved hands wet and if their hands are wet, they will be miserable.  Have FUN!

My daughters's first time ice fishing with me and her older brother from a couple of years back when she was 8.  -5F first thing that morning on Conesus, no wind.  It warmed up later in the morning and sun came out.  We enjoyed hot dogs on the ice.  She caught a ton of bluegills and seeds and a pike too - we brought home over 50 keepers gills/seeds to eat (they were running a bit bigger then than now).  She had a blast and we fished all day.

Thanks fished Candarago years ago for tigers.  Enjoyed that lake a lot even though a guy I was fishing with got his pick up  stuck trying to get off on late season ice.  We still laugh about it though he got hit with a good fine.  Might try Conseues when I lived in Geneseo I use to fish that and loon on a regualr basis.  Another tip was Durand.

I just took my 5yo out for the 1st time.  We went to a spot close to home so I could deal with the short attention span and surprise potty breaks.  I took the wife and dog out with me (usually only the dog comes) so there was plenty of distractions and we could have fun as a family.

.  Another tip was Durand.

The ponds in Durand have springs in various places that makes the ice interesting.  In addition, the FD often cuts a hole in Durand Pond and does ice rescue there...usually, it is flagged off as the ice can be thinner there.    Lots of snow in Irondequoit right now and probably a ton of snow and slush on those ponds as they are recessed and the wind doesn't blow the snow off of them like bigger open waters.  I think my and others suggestions of Conesus are a great idea.

Taking a six year old out for first time on ice.  Any suggestions on where to go on east side of Rochester?  Need some fun action to get him excited about it.

All the above fishing spots are good.  Remember to take the proper gear - clothing, hut, heater and such and let the child do their own fishing.  If they get cold or you are always hooking the fish for them they will not want to go again.  Yes, they will get a few tangles and an occasional birds nest but take the time to work that out and let them understand things like that happen if they rush.  My 7 yr. old nephew does a great job on his own this year and even wanders from hole to hole by himself, only after one year of ice fishing, but does come back to the hut with a mess to straighten out once in a while or a fish to get off his line when he can't do it.

Lots of food and warm drinks! My son always took his Tonka trucks to pass the slow times.

He made three 3.5 hrs on Irondequoit Bay Saturday.  Slush was brutal on north end.  Today with sun out we hit county parks for jigging.  Skunked Sunday.  One flag Saturday.  His grandparents live in Branchport told his grandfather he is coming there next weekend to show him how to ice fish.
