Annual trip
« on: Feb 21, 2015, 10:16 AM »
Hey everyone, looks like I might be heading up to Loughborough soon for - what is turning into - our annual trip.  Have caught a few nice lakers outta there (well, my buddy has, haha) and it's a fun time.  I think instead of the boat launch we are going to head out of Davidson beach.  Is there public parking there?  I figure we'll try the usual tubes, cranks and smelts if can get our hands on them.

We've got a couple days in the area, so we're also thinking of switching it up and going for some splake.  I've read back through a bunch of threads and this is what I can surmise:

Upper rock lake: Has access on the north end through the boat launch.  It seems like most people say the splake outta there are <12".  Navionics doesn't have a chart for this lake and I can't find one online.  What is the general layout of the lake? How deep does it get? Shiners on tipups good?

Dog lake: seems like this lake has everything but lake trout! Don't know where the public access is though, any help?

So this is where I stand right now, can anyone add to the list?

EDIT:

Ok found White Lake:  Fish ONline says that it is stocked with splake.  Anyone fished it?  Anyone know what the access is like?

I should also add that we travel by foot.  There are those two brookie lakes in Frontenac pp that are tempting but the 1km hike in is a little much at this point.

You can get on at Davidson.  You have to park on the road.

Upper Rock, it's about 170ft deep I think. I've caught most splake near shore in about 25 to 40 fow.  Park on Opinicon at the boat launch.  THis will be the shortest walk.  The boat launch is in a shallow bay.  The outer edge of the bay where it drops off can be decent or any of the points or shore lines.  I've caught them all over.

Dog.  You can access in many places.  If you're fishing splake, you probably want to walk out from Burnt Hills Road.  BUt due to the snow, be prepared for a very tough walk.  I wouldn't recommend it although you're more likely to catch fish in the 5 lbs range.  If you look on a topo map of Dog, you will have most success in the 40 ft areas especially where the bottom raises sharply.  A large minnow suspended 3 ft from bottom works good or jig with a small spoon or puppet.

Don't know about the other lake.  Good luck.

So generally Upper Rock holds smaller fish than Dog?

And with regards to parking on Burnt Hills Road, I'm having a hard time finding a spot that has close access to 40' of water.

Can you park at the Marina and off Robert Hogan lane?

yes, I find Dog produces bigger fish consistently.  I don't think it matters where you park, you're in for a tough walk.  There's a plowed layby on Burnt Hills which is where I always park.  I think two weeks ago I was out and the snow was knee deep with a crust on top.  It's about a km out to the drop off where I like to fish.  It's possible that the crust will hold you up now but then we've had some more snow yesterday...  If you look on a map you'll see where the deep chasm of the lake rises to a large 40 foot plateau.  It spans most of the northern portion of the lake but it's a long way from any parking.  You can also access deep water from Gimour Point.  There's public parking and you walk out from the beach.  It's not as far to get to deep water there if you check your topo you'll see what I mean.
