THE WONDER ROD...HAVE YOU SEEN!
« on: Jan 12, 2006, 01:26 PM »
Ok, I dont know if everyone has seen these..or used them. But when I attended the BPS Ice fishing weekend back in December they has a big display of these monsters and they had 2 or 3 reps demoing the use of the item...I will be honest the trained pro was able to make his jig dance like crazy..But I was somewhat sceptical..

So i forget all about these things..then Im in my Local Canadian Tire Store and whatta know..they sell the wonder rod!..These things are popping up everywhere.

For those who dont know what they are...here is a link

http://www.tackle-by-dy.com/Wonder%20Rod%20info.htm

But the idea is, you have an ultra sensative strike indicator that floats above a heavy action rod..so when you set the hook, the indicator goes down to the rod and you have some backbone to bring the fish in..

Why I was weary: I just looks like a gimmicky item...it's big and long (yet lite?) and comes fully together including some neon line...Anyways now that Im starting to see it around I was wondering if anybody had purchased one and what they thought

They already have a much simpler model of this...its callled the spring bobber. $0.75 at your local bait store.

never seen a rod like that before, looks interesting to say the least...

anyone ever use them?

Reel Wet Ride is right seems like a $0.75 spring bobber would do the trick save your money :)

Dont mean to sound stupid, but what exactly is a spring bobber? Any links to a setup with one or anything?

Yep, it's a giant spring bobber ::) .  Save your money.  Seems like it would also be just one more rod to worry about breaking (2 rods on 1 handle...kinda :-\)

No Problem Airman.  Try doing a search in Google.  There are a couple different styles.  Try this.

I disagree...(not about it being oversized..it is). But I think the set-up of this rod which is very simialr to a marmish rod is much better then a spring bobber..Set-ups like these allow you to up the size of jigs you are using and adjust the strike indicater...but on a spring bobber when you dont use micro baits the bobber just completly folds over and becomes useless.

On the weekend I put a medium size wolfram on the spring bobber and down it goes...change over to the marmish and I had a much better read...I dont know if these have the same adjustment option but it reads like it does.

just my opinon

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

There are several types of spring bobbers. Some are really heavy, while others are very flimsy for small light jigs.I have rod that have round or flat wire springs that can be slid in or out to compensate for heavy lures.
When the ice is on. I'm on the ice.

Even their website looks cheesy.
I would call it the Wonder Fraud.
