New to "Colorado" ice fishing (Green Mountain, Dillon, Twin Lakes, Granby)

Hey everyone! I'm new to Colorado fishing. I grew up in Indiana icefishing for walleye, bass, blue gills, perch etc. but I have no experience ice fishing for trout. Moved to Minturn colorado last November but didnt do any ice fishing last year. looking to get out on the ice and have some success catching dinner. I'm just looking for some pointers in the right direction. I currently have 6lb mono line on one of my rods and 3lb mono on my other rod. Will this be sufficient? Does anyone have any suggestions on what lake I should focus on in the high country? (twin lakes, Lake dillon, Green mountain res. or Lake granby)? Does anybody use under water cameras(marcum or Aqua-Vu) with any success or are the waters too deep and dark for them to be of much use? I appreciate any help youre willing to share! Thanks!

Camera's not much help, in murky water, Trout will hit most anything, from small jigs tipped with wax worms, to jigging spoons

If you are looking for a place to get your feet wet, Georgetown is a great place. It's full of brown and rainbow trout. Cameras are always a useful tool. Nearly every mountain lake is crystal clear so you can see a ways. However, depending on what you are fishing for it will be too deep for light penetration. Georgetown is a little murky but you can still see 3 or 4 feet. Here is a video from Georgetown I took earlier this year.

Green Mountain, most use tube jigs tipped with a little sucker meat, anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 inches, 20-80 feet. George town, HD Ice lure, small jigs with meal or wax worms 6-10 feet.

Thank you so much for all the pointers. I can't wait to get out there and give it a shot. I'll probably try Georgetown just to get my feet wet and hopefully catch something. That video from December looks awesome! Is there a bait shop near Georgetown that sells meal worms or a bait shop near green mountain that sells suckers?

Hold on - Georgetown sucks.
Dont drive past all the much better lakes on the westslope to fish Georgetown. It is a put and take lake right on I70 that gets hammered with ice fishing pressure. You will be hugely dissappointed when you find out it's filled with 8-10 inch stockers.
Try Homestake Reservoir outside of Minturn or Reudi or Sylan Lake. Even Officers Gulch is better than Georgetown.
Good luck

i live in georgtown and dont really fish there as there are alot of people and would rather not listen to intersatte....
ive been hitting green mt. and dillon... dillon seems slow but im not really familiar with it... at green mtn ive been near the dam in 107 ft of water and they have been suspended around 20-50 ft of water or shooting up from bottom... caught 8 in an hr around 1pm a couple weeks ago
also 11 mile has been good fro me as well but a long drive
tried granby the other day for the first time... couldnt get to where i wanted too imnew to pressure ridges and walking by myself wasnt will to cross the area where 3 ridges came together?
but marked alot of fish on the bottom in 58 ft of water lots of window shoppers and a couple bumps...
williams fork i hit once and was slow for me but first time there...
i'd be willing to hook up if you are available weekdays.. i'm off tue/wed and have just gotten back into the ice since a hiatus from 1997...

Mtnhillbilly, let me take a look at my schedule and I'll get back to you I usually have a couple days off during the week and most weekends.. Have you ever had any luck at dillon fishing for attic char?? That's definitely on my bucket list of fish to catch!

Reudi is currently open so don'e go there without your long rods. I didn't see you are in Minturn. You should fish at turqiouse or twin. Both awesome lakes just target lake trout. If you need any pointers fishing for lake trout shoot me a PM. I was in your position 2 years ago. At first it was tough to figure it out just because it is completely foreign to guys like us from the Midwest. Once you learn a technique or two and where to target them its a very fun and easy fish to catch.

i dont really know where to go on dillon... tried the inlet... shallow and weedy... just caughtrainbow stockers but would like to get the char and salmon out of there... access seems difficult between steep drops and private property... i was thinking about trying the marina in dillon for access as well... just have to put my time in i guess.... with littlle free time ive just been hitting up what i do know... im unaware of depths so just have to get out there and have at it...

Georgetown has a habit of eating auger blades because of the wind blown sand in/on the ice.

^^^This is true. If you decide on Georgetown, buy some extra blades while you're at the bait shop. And it's not really the best time of year to target kokes on Dillon.
I'd suggest trying GM or WF and have a good time chasing lakers without worrying about ruining your auger. Skip the camera, but make sure you have a good flasher. For lake trout, I use 12lb fluoro and a heavy rod. Any of the shops can get you set up with the right laker jigs. Try Master Bait and Tackle on Heeney Road. And welcome to Colorado!

Totally forgot about that Bud, Georgetown eats up blades real quickly. Not holding my breathe about any local ice getting fishable this year.

On way to Gander at 3, see some real black....And I mean BLACK ice in the area of west ramp. Open all along the dam, heard a guy went out on the Dam at 4 and left at 5 because the open water started icing in again.
