high end rods
« on: Feb 06, 2015, 06:46 PM »
why is it that most high end rods have to have the reel taped on??  is there a real reason or just how they do it

i'm not a fan of taped reels. feels weird to me when the handle is flexing.

i'd say they want you to install it where you want it for balance. maybe they claim more sensitivity too not having a reel seat.

High end ice rods are overrated in my opinion! If you're interested in spending a lot of money on a ice rod that's factory built your nutts! A guy can have a custom built rod for less with your choice of components over the same ole lame ole that's readily available in a sporting goods store!

my opinion is reel seats are a bit heavier so may lose just a touch of sensitivity and also like mentioned, many reels are different weight so being able to mount accordingly for balance. I am not a fan of reel seats but to each their own. If you don't like tape then try casterating bands from your local farm store. They are about $3 for 100 of them and will allow you to not have to tear tape off each time. They act similar to a reel seat actually in that a reel is easily removed and a new one attached. Not to mention a reel seat handle takes some care in installing it as its easy to have it off just a little bit and once your epoxy is dry your done. Just my 2 cents.

ya by high end rods i meant customs or somewhat customs. ya just not having real seats reminds me of my old broom handle ice rods i used to make out of broken summer rods and golf tees. guess the balance thing makes sense and also less weight looks like im just gonna have to try one

I don't like the rods you have to tape the reels on either, and I don't spent over $40 on a rod, still liking my old st crois 32" MH, also really like the fenwick elite ice MH

My TB & Custom Ryno rods were worth every $, night & day improvement in sensitivity over my cheaper rods imo. I tape reel on w/ silicone tape. Better to adjust reel placement to sweet spot on handle.

I don't use tape anymore, but those rubber o-ring thingies instead. Much more convenient and easier to do.

Yes, for sensativity and preferred rod placement to make it balanced.  Although one of my favorite panfish rods has a solid wood handle with a seamless real seat, which fits inside the handle. The wood, instead of cork, really makes the rod sensative.  You will also get used to the feel of not having large reel seats, if you're holding the rod.  I also like the reel seats 13Fishing is using on some of their rods too, very ergonimic and narrow with a high degree of sensativity.

High end/low end, castration bands work the best for me. No damage to the rod & I can swap out reels anytime ;)

If your from Angola you need to get a Siegel custom rod ,  the wicked are decent rods . Leroy makes custom wood handle rods with reel seats in glass or graphite in pretty much any length you want .

All I use are TB rods, and except for two bait casters and a spinning rod with built in seats, all the reels are taped on. For me it's the balance, feel, responsiveness, and the ultimate; the grin factor.
Catching a large trout on such a set up is a fun time! With recoil guides and an Okuma SLV, it cuts the weight down and increases sensitivity. I fish shallow enough that this works well. I'm not
saying this is the way to go. Rod and reel about $150. My daily ride is a "98" Toyota with 330,000 original miles and the synchros have been gone for the last 75,000. You have to have you priorities!

I have the hidden hood handle on my TB walleye sweethearts. I really like that handle.  Reel stays locked in place.
