First time to Peck
« on: Feb 05, 2015, 08:41 PM »
Hello all. I'm going to be making my first trip to Peck on the hard water Feb 20-23. We have cabins reserved at Rock Creek Marina. As you can imagine I'm outside my mind with excitement. I've prolly spent more on tackle in preparation than I have in the last few seasons. I'm looking for any advice on the road in, live vs dead bait, known danger zones or anything you wish you would have had you're first time the big lake during hard water. Good luck to the crew on hell creek this week!

Keep in touch with the guy there at the Marina, I can't remember his name. That road in is a mess if it's above freezing temps, and there's any snow. We always have plan B which is to go in on the N. Fork rd. and ride the ATV's across the bay from the State boat ramp. The North Fork road is good gravel.

The road in is my main concern. Out of a handful of us we might have one wheeler. How far of a ride/walk/crawl if the road sucks?

Definitely take the state park rd and drive across the bay to thecabins. Youll catch northerns really easy in 15ft of water or less. Walleyes can be tricky there ,but at night in shallow water like 10'or less. Bigger the bait, bigger the fish. Ice is usually good through out the main bay ,when getting towards the main part of the dry arm it can get sketchy in places.

There is NO crossing gumbo in an afterthaw.  Seriously think about an exit plan (if there is one...) if the road is frozen pre-dawn and expected to warm above freezing during the day.
