Any info on fishing these waters? I heard that Hinckley is closed to ice fishing, but can't find anything related to that rumor on the DEC website.
I never see the other bodies really listed on here either.
Is it worth a weekend trip?
Hey Charlie, the kid's got one on over here...

You cannot icefish Hinkley!...The ice is sketchy, one minute you can be on 8" of ice the next you will be on a air pocket.

Kayuta is FULL of Pickerel and is open for Ice fishing. I would probably go between Dustin Road and the railroad tressel, but finding parking could be difficult. Its really shallow, but has good structure and weed beds. You may luck out and get on a mess of perch, but most likely, you will be catching pickerel all day.

I would stay off Forestport Reservoir. Hit up Kayuta or Delta if you want to fish...idk how the ice is though.

These guys must not want you to fish Hinckley. It is definitely open for ice fishing. Check the special regs page. I have fished it many times and have never had air pockets under the ice. Just my experience. Would like to hear about the air pockets from somebody that has experienced it first hand and not just rumors or urban legend ice fishing stories.

I've fished Forestport Reservoir in the summer for panfish, fun in a canoe.  Not on ice though.  If you go north a bit, you can fish 4th lake or Raquette late for some good fishing.

I live on Kayuta, fish Hinkley, and once in a while the forestport reservoir. First off, at this time, you're safer on Hinkley than any of the other two. Forestport reservoirs ice is thin because of the early snow and current. I, myself, would not step foot on it. Besides, you will most likely only find a pickerel or two in there. Kayuta, I have not fished it this year, or have I seen anyone else. I did see tracks from some idiots skiing under Obrien rd bridge, and someone rode a sled under the Dustin rd bridge. What is wrong with ppl! Anyways, on Kayuta, you can find perch and a lot of pickerel mostly with the occasional small mouth or tiger muskie. The problem right now is access onto the lake and the snow on the ice. Out of the three, I would stick to Hinkley. The ice was great two weeks ago, has to be well over a foot now, but the bite has been tough. I usually go there for the perch, but it has been very tough finding them in size. You also have the chance to hook up with a brown, brookie, pickerel, bass, or even a crappie depending on where you go. As far as air pockets, I'll be honest, I'm shaking my head right now. People should not give ridiculous assumptions. As they lower the reservoirs, there may be a brief time where there is a gap between the ice and water. But I'm only talking an inch. The ice can not hold it's own weight and quickly drops back to the water. I have been out there where the ice dropped 16" in one day as I was fishing. It's all normal physics and nothing to keep you of the body of water. The only thing you need to watch for are ice heaves and pressure cracks on Hinkley. Again, the snow is going to make it very difficult, and having a snowmobile will be key on Hinkley. If I were you, I would scrap all three and head to the Fulton chain as previously stated.
