I remember a trip once with crappy Magog ice conditions:
I remember several years back I took my son ice fishing, his first time out, at Magog one day. I had a Ford Ranger reg. cab, 4 wheel drive, standard shift.
Now from where we lived at the time, it was a 90 minute drive to get to Newport.
As I drove out towards the twin islands, the thick crust was breaking away from under my tires and below that was 3-4 inches of water/slush, then hard ice again. next thing I know, my truck is going slower and slower having a really hard time navigating/breaking through the crappy ice conditions.
I decided to turn around and in the process I got stuck. Good thing I had a large metal snow shovel with me to help clear a path out of there but it took me at least an hour of rocking my truck back and forth, digging, more rocking back and forth, more digging, more rocking back and forth-with a standard shift, etc...
My son was only about 8 years old at the time so he certainly wasn't any help physically to try and help get me out.
When I was free and heading back to shore, we tried fishing closer to shore but didn't have much luck.
My truck and the standard transmission took a beating that day on the ice.
We drove back home, a 90 minute drive and all was well. The next morning I headed to work and went about 1/4 mile when my drive shaft fell completely off the truck!!!
Talk about being lucky! I can't imagine what kind of a pickle I would have been in if that drive shaft had fallen out while trying to get unstuck when I was way out on the ice........
That day was crappy ice conditions for sure...
