I inherited a 10 year old power auger and had the carb replaced last week.   The 2HP Tecumseh small engine just does not seem to be revving as powerful as it should be.  It runs as if I'm only holding the throttle down 2/3 the way.  It does seem to be meeting the limit of the governor however.

I am not worried about the voiding the warranty, however I would like to avoid blowing up the engine. Has anyone ever noticed a similar issue and can any small adjustments be made to slightly increase speed?  It will cut as is, it's just a bummer to work harder and take longer when I know the power is there.  Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the spring was re installed wrong or stretched a bit.

Thanks, I'll look into replacing it.  I'm fairly engine illiterate, but isn't the purpose of the spring to close the throttle though, not open it?    I was also thinking about shortening the throttle wire that opens the gate/throttle.

EDIT:  I checked out the engine parts list- there's a governor spring and a compression spring.  Perhaps you meant the compression spring?  I know nothing about this stuff.  http://www.generalequip.com/prod_library/255-item.pdf  Thanks in advance

Remove air cleaner assy. and look at throttle plate to check if
it is opening fully when throttle lever is  depressed
throttle cable may have to be adjusted
Regards

I have a feeling it does, I just didn't know if that sorta thing happens or can be adjusted.  With everything fully intact, i reached in and swung the throttle shaft wide open with my finger just to prove that the motor was capable of revving up higher and spinning the auger quicker.   The thing is, it seems like when the throttle is pressed down- the speed control plunger reaches its max distance. (controlled by the governor)   I now don't believe the governor needs to be adjusted but am thinking the governor spring should be replaced, or maybe I should adjust the throttle cable?  thanks in advance for comments

I replaced the governor spring which may have tightened up the pull a tad.  The old spring seemed fine though.   I did add a kink to the throttle cable to shorten that a bit and allow for the governor slide to pull to its furthest allowable location.  Definitely helped.  That's about all I can do though.  Thanks for suggestions.

That little spring can be a pain......mine was stretched out too when I had to do some work on the carb.....replaced it. It is very easy to damage that spring when taking the carb off and reinstalling.
