Maui Jim glasses saved my vision
« on: Jan 14, 2015, 07:39 AM »
So last year i bit the bullet and bought a nice pair of Maui Jim sun glasses. They are awesome for open water fishing and even better on the ice. Recently i was working a house fire with my local fire department when a hose coupling let loose and caught me in the eye. Lucky for me i was wearing my Maui's. Unluckily for my Maui's they took the full impact of the metal coupling. I really have to give it to Maui Jim for producing an amazing pair of glasses. The impact was hard enough to break the frame of the glasses in 2 spots, and split the lens into two pieces. The outside of the lens shattered but the inside acted as it was supposed to and just split. I fully believe i would have been injured pretty bad if i didn't have them on, and i cant imagine picking the plastic shards out of my eye from a cheap pair of glasses. All in all i walked away with only a small cut on my brow! I will be purchasing another pair!

Glad to hear you are ok! Make sure you send this story to the manufacturer. I bet they will send you a new pair...Oakley did for me!

Wow!!  Glad to hear you are ok and that the glasses did their job.  Sounds like it could of been a lot uglier if you had not been wearing those glasses or a cheaper pair.

Glad to hear you are 'OK'.  I have a few pairs of Maui's and love them.  Give Maui Jim's a call.  They will fix or replace your glasses for you.  Sometimes there is a small fee involved but it will still be cheaper than buying a new pair.

I too am glad your eyes were protected.  As far as replacing your glasses, the fire department's insurance carrier should foot the bill.  If you are on the roll call of a volunteer fire dept, you and your personal equipment should be covered under their insurance policy.
take care,

Wow. As to hear. You would have lost that eye. Good glasses are worth it.
This is why I buy Wiley X.

Costa Del Mar's here. Life is too short to look through sub-par glasses.

After being a die hard Maui Jim fan for many years, I got my first pair of Costas this year and won't be going back. Costas have 4 lenses 400 Plastic, 400 Glass, 580 Plastic and 580 Glass, with the 580 Glass being the best. Anyone looking for polarized shades check Sierra Trading Post. I got my Costa Blackfins there and paid less than half price.

I sent my message into Maui and they didn't offer to replace. Not that i was expecting them to but that would have been sweet. Thought about sending them in for repair but i bet it's over half of what i could buy a new pair for. (lenses alone are 60) What do you find better about the Costas flyfish? Im not against trying other brands if the quality is the same

Have you talked with the insurance carrier for your fire dept? Either the dept or their carrier should replace your glasses.  The incident would not have happened had you not been fighting a fire.

Wow that's really an awesome break.  I'm a bit familiar with fire hoses and fittings from construction applications and would think getting struck with one in the head at hydrant pressure could have had even nastier ramifications than loss of vision.  Somebody musta been looking out for you.  I have a pair of Prescription Costas and 2 pair of MJ's (1 prescription/1 not) only because I've had unused flex plan dollars left over the last few years. I like them both a lot but the MJ's fit my fat head better so I tend to grab them first but they all ice/fly fish really well.

Count your blessings Tom, My grandfather lost his eye to a fire hose. I know Wiley X are military issue. My son in law still has his as a tanker in Korea.

I do realize that i could use the FD insurance but i decided to wear them, don't want to stick my dept with the hassle. I am very grateful that things went the way they did. I would much rather pay for the glasses then front the bill for reconstructive surgery to my eye socket! The man upstairs defiantly had my back that day!

Maui Jim Sun Glasses are fantastic!  Very expensive but once again you get what you paid for!  Glad to hear you were alright and your eyes are no worse for wear!

My Maui Jim's are the most important piece of equipment in my boat/truck. Their ability to eliminate glare from the sun behind me is AMAZING! They are far from cheap but worth every penny. I won't drive any distance without them and I would never fish without them either.
