Bait Alton traffic Circle
« on: Jan 12, 2015, 07:19 AM »
Anybody know what they have for bait if any? Going to be in that area early tomorrow and short on bait and time to replenish.

Thanks

Their bait sucks. I bought some Saturday and half was dead before noon. I will no longer do business with that store, period.

I found a nice place in Barnstead off 28. Mom and pop place, I'll suck up the drive and go out of my way before giving wayside another nickel of mine.

Plus the corner store in the bay is now closed.

Good luck!

They did have smelt and shiners.  I didn't buy any smelt, they looked awful.  Its a hit or miss with there smelt for sure.  The water is way to warm and they need a better bait tank set up.  They add store temp water to the tank to replace the water that goes with the bait the customers buy.

I found a guy over on Beauty Hill Road in Barnstead that traps his own bait and had really good luck with it. No smelt yet, but he said he will be getting some. I forget all of his pricing but it was $4 for 14 small shiners. He had some real nice suckers in there. Just regular worms, no waxies or mousies. Some decent prices on the gear he had in there also.

I've never had an issue with their bait and have kept it over night and as long as  3 days in just a bait bucket and battery operated aerator..Saturday  I never lost a single one....well except for  the 2 dozen I fed to the fish...

Was there this morning. Bait tanks were full, and there shiners caught us fish today....., like others said their bait isn't the best though, especially the smelt. A bunch of their smelt were swimming sideways or belly up. The tank looked over filled. Not only that, the ladies there sometimes don't know how to count and give you under the number you asked/payed for (we were shorted 2 on a dozen and a half today) Other/smaller shops on the other hand will give you a few extra. And the tip of the iceberg is that their beer is expensive. They are convenient though, and open at 5am now.

I got a dozen shiners there today, they were in good shape but the tank was overfilled. The ladies really don't like pulling bait out and takes 10 minutes to count to 12. But it's close to Alton bay.

Whoah, Whoah - Amilynes closed? Corner store at tip of bay? That sucks. Can't say I didn't see it coming. But they were nice peeps. I have bought both good and bad bait at the circle. Most usually good, but yes, they hate dealing with it and do so poorly. More importantly, do they have suckers in yet??? Heading out there this weekend and we will need all kinds of bait including suckers. They usually carry all sizes. Were there any in the tank?

Yes indeed they are closed. Moving trucks there all weekend, and by the looks and sounds of things it will probably be a while before they re-open.

I didnt see any suckers, but I wasn't really paying attention to what was in the tanks.

The h20 in the tank at Alton is probably too warm my guess being in  a store
Ike that, maybe buy them a day ahead and let them aclimate.

I picked up a dozen smelt and a dozen shiners on Sunday.  Bait stayed alive fine and my bait bucket was freezing up pretty bad.  I thought the smelt were a bit small.  The biggest problem is that they dont open until 6am, so if I wanted to start really early I would go somewhere else the night before.
A watched lake never freezes.

Bought smelt there this am. there was a giant stack of dead ones and they gave me a dozen instead of 6 cause they were in such rough shape!  They may all be dead by the weekend. I would call there first

I change the water daily in my smelt bait bucket and keep aerator going 24/7 (battery unit on ice , cheap $5. Walmart fish tank pump when I get home) .  I have had smelt (from alton circle) alive for about a week now.
They did have a few small suckers last week.

I would much rather use Donnie @ Fish Tales off Rt 28 in Center Barnstead for bait but he didn't have smelt last week.
