Hello,

New to the message boards and new to Northern Indiana. I was wondering if anyone had any Ice condition info on any lakes? I normally fish pine an stone lakes in Laporte but was looking for any lake to fish this weekend with safe ice. Im willing to travel a little if you guys had any thoughts? I appreciate any input.

With this cold, I would expect most lakes to have SOME safe ice.  You should always be spudding this time of year as you travel on the ice until you are sure your path and fishing area are safe.  Some lakes still had large open water areas as of Monday this week.  Now with the snow cover it will all look the same.  Don't go alone, have all safety equipment handy and spud your way on and off the ice.  Smaller shallower bodies of water should be a safer bet than large ones, but it all depends on when the locked up as to if they will be safe this weekend.  Have you checked Pine and Stone?  I would expect there to be some fishable ice on them by Saturday.  Never trust a stranger on an Internet forum to tell you what ice is safe or not, always use your own judgement and a spud to check it for yourself.  I haven't been out since Sunday on a channel so I don't have any recommendations, but there has to be lakes that are fish-able by now.

If you see some shanties out there then you can spud your way around and check the ice thickness.  For people to be out in shanties there has to be 2" or more out there.  With the cold, it is probably alot more where they are fishing, but remember some parts of alot of lakes were open on Monday, so spud spud spud.  You could also swing by around dark and see if you can catch someone walking off and ask them about the ice conditions out there.

  • Happiness is a safe piece of ice.
All I can say is I love the handle!!!!!!!!!!!  That just made my day........you need to check with Crappiehunter.  He lives on either Pine or Stone and is around here quite a bit.

As of yesterday morning in kosciusko county, I spudded 1.5-4.5 inches of main lake ice.... no channels.  The lakes are putting on ice pretty quickly.... but take Waxworm's advice....SPUD!

  • Bucket, some bait and,,what did she ask me to do??
Most the comments I removed where guys just having some fun and I believe IndyA saw that.  Agreed, the best thing to do is drive around and check as its nothing personal towards anyone, but trust no one unless they are people that you fish with on a continuing biases.

We are fishing LOOMIS lake this sunday in valpo in the afternoon if you want to come out and join the group   2 pm   ice is good
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.
