Pressure cracks
« on: Jan 06, 2015, 04:56 PM »
Went south to Otter Creek this AM with two Brothers In-Law. While we were unloading one got on his wheeler and went to check on the fishing conditions with another fisherman who was about 100 yards away. On his way back he tried to cross a recent pressure crack and went through the ice . He was in ten to twelve ft of water . To his great fortune the fisherman he had talked to had a rope and was able to get it to him. By the time I got to him with my safety rope he was back on the ice. We were able to get him into some dry coveralls and into the truck to warm up. However his wheeler is out of sight under the ice. Long story short we were really lucky today, If that other man had not been there the outcome might have been different. Please carry all of your safety equipment even if you have never had to use it. It just might save someone's life. Although the ice was 7 to 8 inches thick the opening at the pressure crack was still re-freezing and was about 2 inches thick. Could have happened to anyone.

Good advice!  Always have my long rope and ice picks with me just in case.  Whether 8 inches of ice or 2ft you never know.  Glad everyone is ok, wheelers can be recovered and replaced.

Its good to hear that everyone was alright. Like you said sinker that could have been really bad. I to carry a safety throw rope that tucks up real nice into a throw sack and ice picks always no matter how much ice there is.

Sinker Seeker glad to hear everyone is safe machines can be replaced. We get lots of pressure ridges on the gorge I'll go miles out of my way to avoid them.

I always have a rope with me as well, along with a throwable  cushion to tie to it.  the cushion is also nice to sit  on bucket or chair for more comfort.

Pressure ridge + early ice = bad news, no matter where it is.
