Black Betty 6061 Help
« on: Jan 13, 2015, 12:11 PM »
Hi there. I feel foolish admitting this but I guess I do not understand how to work or configure this reel. I bought it hoping to not have to buy something else next year. That was how I justified it to myself. Anyway. I took it out this weekend and noticed when I had a fish on and I tired to reel, the handle would turn but the spool would not unless there was no resistance. I could not seem to change this with the drag setting. Is it suppose to be like that? What am I doing wrong?

This happened to me once .. I think you just need to to tighten the reel up .. Opposite side of the drag .. The little nob on the reel. I think that's what the problem was

Thanks. I'm not sure that's it. I just spent some time fooling with it in my garage. I guess I'm just not super pleased with the reel or Its this way on purpose and I'm just not very bright. I'm new to inline reels but it seems odd that I can turn the handle and the spool won't turn if there is tension on the line  ???

Are you turning the star wheel by the handle clock wise to tighten drag?

Did it come with any kind of instructions?
Sometimes the more complicated a device is the more simple the fixes.

Hopefully your solution will be an easy one!!

Yes I am. It didn't come with instructions.. I'm almost wondering if it's designed to pull up the rod and then reel a small amount of line slack at a time to keep it tight. Idk maybe I'm an idiot..

I have that reel and the only thing I can think of is the drag may be to loose. Mine doesn't do that if the drag is set.

What kind of line are you using? If braid, did you put a little bit of electrical tape first then spooled on the braid?

Without something for the braid to catch it will just free spin as you are reeling in.

Im using braid but it is spooled correctly and the line is tight. The spool turns the line no problem unless there is a fish on the line. IF nothing is biting I can release my line and retrieve it no problem. I emailed 13 fishing and asked them

Is the braid directly on the reel arbor metal or did you back it with something like tape or mono?

That's probably your issue then. I would cover the reel arbor with a layer of mono and then put the braid back on. Hope that works for you.

When a fish is on If the spool turns and the line does not come in it probably is a line issue. When a fish is on and the spool does not turn it is not a line issue. It could be a drag issue then. And in both cases I am assuming you are reeling.

You should probably strip the reel and start over, with the mono first or tape braid after you tie it on, as some guys already mentioned...maybe the drag is stripped? Or maybe yer line is slipping and you have a drag issue?googd luck with that. I don't ice with in line reels, I have fly reels, but I don't see an advantage. We're not fishing surface current or mending line. Feels like a trendy fad to sell overpriced reels.

Gotta use backing if you're going braid. No probs w/ my 2014  6061. Drag even smoothed out.

I think so. I talked to 13 fishing and they think its not working correctly. They asked me to send it in.

My experience with 13 fishing has been great, they will no doubt fix it or send you a new reel and in a timely fashion
