thoughts on next weekend for finger lakes?
« on: Dec 26, 2014, 07:51 PM »
Anybody thinking we will be on safe ice by next weekend? I'm sure up north might be OK but what about down here in the finger lakes areas?

That's what I'm thinking. Local ponds might be OK but a trip north might be in order

My prediction would be local ponds a week after January 1st, and south end of honeoye 2 wks after the turn of the new year. Who knows at this point. Freakin weather forecast changes hourly it seems.

Looking at the ten day...I'd have to agree. My kiddo is dying to try his aqua vu out...I keep telling him give it time. All the while I'm like hurry up!!!

It's looking like its getting colder on the 10 day!! Keep having 16 degree nights with weather around 29 degrees should help us out trumendously! But as for this weekend we are making the hike up north Friday, just can't wait any longer ! Wish us luck !  :icefish:

Those of you heading up north this weekend may want to register for the NYS Winter Classic Tournament if you haven't already! You could ice a fish that ends up placing! @)

I don't think there will be any ice by next weekend
May your holes on the ice be larger than the fish brought to it.

with the way the 10 day is looking there could be safe ice by next week on Honeoye if it doesn't get windy. only 1 day that wont be below freezing from what it looks like. fingers crossed hoping for ice.
That's a Bluegill, no that's a Sunfish...I've heard it both ways!!

Yeah, it is looking pretty good now for the next 2 weeks anyways. This will for sure lock up the smaller waterways and any protected shallower bays, especially if we don't see any wind.  @)

Need some cold wind when your favorite lake or pond locks up to cool the warmer water trapped under the ice as long as a heavy blanket of snow doesn't cover the ice. That is the reason our forecast looks so promising, should be some fishable ice in 2 weeks if no warm spells or rain interferes with the process.
I googled How ice forms on a lake for that info.so it's not my theory but made sense when I read link so if you want to know how the process works check it out and be safe everyone, good luck to all in the New Year!
