How far north?
« on: Dec 22, 2014, 09:24 PM »
Hi Guys,
I have some time off next week and I promised my 9yr old we would get on some ice.
I'm located in northern Illinois. Since there is no ice here in the Flatlands , I am wondering how far north we will need to go for safe ice?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I was not able to get out this weekend, so I can not give you an ice depth report, but I did see people on lake Wissota in Chippewa Falls on Saturday.  Not sure how the ice is further south.  Good Luck!

I'll be going 3.5 hrs north from Gurnee to fish whitefish on Greenbay this friday. Buddy was just there over the weekend and said 10-12"

Wis/Michigan boarder we have a good 12"+ with minimal snow cover. But that will be changing by the weekend.

Seems like there's a "weather break" around Oshkosh or thereabouts.... Just starts to get different there compared to farther south. Heck they were driving on Puckaway until all this global warming crap. There should still be at least walkable ice from there north. Around here there's still 5-6" close to shore in some of the first bays that froze but I haven't checked farther out. Saw a few guys all over our one popular downtown lake 2 days ago....

Hope things stiffen back up soon,

Thanks for the input so far! I'm still debating where to go.
We would be on foot with a flip over and gear so mobility won't be much of an issue.
I also have friends up in Park Falls and in Phillips who say the ice is good . I just don't know if the kid is up for that much of a drive.
Thanks  again and keep us posted

I was on about 8 to 10 in.  On a shallow lake around the portage area.

Has this cold snap Helped any of the southern or central lakes?
We may just go north till we get to something  safe, we were hoping to head out Tuesday or Thursday.
If you would like to share info please pm , I totally understand this is public.

Conditions are getting very sloppy up by me on the wi/mi boarder. Heavy snows this past week have created slushy conditions. Ice depths are 6-12" depending on where you go.
