BC Brook Trout Leaveing Me Weak in the Knees!
« on: Nov 14, 2014, 11:12 PM »
I was so bloody excited to think "sure I can!" I could go solo on the lake. I have no experience with early ice so had no idea what to expect. Until I was given word there should be 5" by now based on the cold snap we have had. Well, I circled the house for a couple hours trying to focus on what I needed to get ready (I thought I was ready already a few weeks ago BTW)... I didn't focus well as I spoke like a buzzing ice junky (the good kind) to aunty about my mission.  Finally the ball started rolling and I was all geared up! First light on one of my favorite lakes was mine!

When I arrived, I discovered a path made by someone's smaller skimmer sled. I decided, thats the safest way to go with my larger sled. I prove the ice a little ways in... well let me tell you this was a first for this thin ice virgin! Chipping at the ice with the hatchet, 3" down and *CRACK!* The most frigid black lightning bolt shot across the entire length of the lake ringing its ice thunder we all know so well. Magnificent! A little bit scary but brilliant none the less.

I continued my travel to the only one spot anyone had dared. Not a single hole drilled... but a few cracks. I take who ever it was may have been scared off. I drill. 4'' of solid black ice. I didn't much care for the spot as it was only 3 feet deep and gravel bottomed, but I gave it an honest go... Thinking, what would a serious angler do?! Well, I want to go to my spot, quite a ways from shore, on ice not one soul had dared yet. DO EET! Loaded and checking thickness every 20 steps or so. Its all good! Found my "game trail" as I like to call it and dropped line. OH BOY! What a fish! My little ugly stick was bent in circles, the hog wouldn't leave the under belly of the ice, trying so hard to shake my lure. Hands are trembling, knees are shacking! I need to land this fish! Heads in the hole, my fingers next to his gill plate and the hook straitens and goes flying just as my fingers slip into the gills! YES! I almost dropped him, but I will wet 2 sleeves in -20 for a fish like that! I shouted out many things. All in thanks :)

I was ohhhhh so satisfied!

Some time went by and I had not even seen one more fish. I drilled one more hole that sent not one but 3 lightening bolts shooting across the lake with such ringing noise it spooked the father and children that had just arrived on the lake about to drill their first hole. So this was the last hole of the day before I run home to be Mom :)

Oh this is just the beginning of what will be an awesome week. Good luck and safety to everyone venturing out this season! TIGHT LINES and strong hooks to you all!

Thank you for the photos Ooberfish beautiful scenery you have there in British Columbia. Congratulations on catching the trout.  The temperature's are starting to drop by me still waiting to get out on the ice here in south east New York state.

Nice brook trout.  I was under a big garbage bag looking down the hole when a crack like you describe thundered across the lake.  The water jumped in the hole wetting my nose.  The echo lasted for a few minutes.  So did my heart rate race last for a few minutes.  Laying on 3 inches of ice.  Sat out on the lake last night watching the meteor shower and listening to the ice sing(cracking).  Counted 21 bright falling stars a another 20 dull ones.  LIG
Wishing I was Fishing.
