Best Pop-Up shelter?
« on: Dec 05, 2014, 12:36 PM »
Just wondering everyone's opinion of the best pop-up shelter. I have been looking at the big side-by-side shelters that say they hold up to 6 people. I know they don't have room for more than 3-4 people, but that's the size I am looking for. I want to use it for fishing and spearing.

thanks for the comments

Check out the fatfish, same size as the other 6 men but has more floor space

I have the Frabill Outpost hub style and it works good for sprearing. Comfortable with 3 people, heater, and some gear.  The one downfall with this style is that the yellow stripes let in...some...light.  If I were to purchase a new shanty, it would be the Clam hub style.

They are all pretty much the same. They will keep the cold out but on really cold days a heater is nice.

Those insulated Fatfish and the Polar Fire Extremes are hard to beat for the money!

I have the Catfish and there is plenty of room for six.  As far as heating goes, I use interlocking 2x2 foam squares on the floor.  I have no problems heating it in sub zero days.  Be sure to bury the snowflap or it can turn into a parachute. .... Don't ask how I know that.

When I was shopping last year it seemed the shappell's were made of a heavier material...I think it was 600d versus 300d.

I've owned two different Clam hubs - the original Base Camp and a Bigfoot XLT4000.  Both had zipper problems 1st season of use.  I have a flip now, but if I were to pick up another Hub it'd be a Frabill Command Post or Eskimo Fatfish.

I'm looking at getting an Eskimo Fatfish 6120, its a six sided shelter with lots of room. I have been in Clam pop-ups and Frabill pop-ups but I like the Eskimo's the best. I have fished out of the Quick Fish 6 quite a few times with my buddies and with 5 of us and our holes drilled and a heater there was still plenty of room. You also can't beat the Eskimo ice anchors.

Just recently purchase the Eskimo 6120i. Have yet to used it ice fishing (first time will be tomorrow at Georgetown-with moderate wind) so will give full review then. But from just having it open at the house,  it has plenty of room for 6 people and all the gear one will ever pack with them ice fishing. The "black out" interior and removal window are a great plus!

Just got a Eskimo 767i  seems like a quality shack. Haven't used it yet. Got it to try out a pop ups. I am ' 5'8'' and can stand up in it in the center of the shack and my head doesn't touch. They say the height is 5'7'' so that was/is a bonus I can stand in it. Fabric seems pretty decent and the stitching is tight. Gonna be hard to go to the pop up from the flip over I think....

any house is a good house,  they all have pro's and con's. I have a frabill outpost the only con that I have ran into is a wet snow/rain will seep at seams. has anyone tried any type of protection?

If you want to fish 4 people comfortably I would recommend a Clam Bigfoot XL6000 TC.  Lots of room and easily fishes 4 guys with two holes each.  Put up and take down isn't very hard once you figure it out. We have a Clam Command Post, which is a older model but works well.  Retails around $475...

How do you keep from getting tangled lines? 8 lines in such a small area, are you shallow water?

For spearing I would go with the Eskimo, I have a fatfish and have been in a couple Clams.  The clam is much brighter as light comes in through the walls not just the windows, my eskimo is a bit frustrating if you get set up too early in the morning, then I have to have a light source to see what I'm doing.  I will likely go to a clam for my next one as I just don't sight fish anymore, good sonar and a spring bobber and there is no need to sight fish and get an aching back by the end of the day.

The Frabil 2 man pop up I have had for a few years has held up great.  It has handled the wind really well and proven pretty durable.

I have the Eskimo Quick Fish 6 and love it.  If I am by myself, I use an old Quick Flip 2.  The Quick Flip 2 is on its last leg, so I may replace it with a Quick Fish 2 or 3.

I will be setting mine up for the first time this weekend, but last weekend I was able to pickup a 1 yo Eskimo Fatfish 9416 for $250 which is about half of retail. Not sure who's more excited about it me or my 7 yo.
