aeration system
« on: Dec 17, 2014, 08:44 AM »
I'm looking to get set up a little better this year for bait. I usually take a few trips to moosehead with a large group each year and we've always had a problem keeping smelt alive with the 5g buckets with a Mr bubbles. Maybe its to many smelt, not enough O2, crappy smelt (store bought). Anyways, wondering if anyone has experience with something like this and its worth the $$$$.

Can you get your smelts bagged with Ox?  Or buy them closer to Moosehead?

I get them from the shop right there in Rockwood. It's a couple years in a row where I've had to run to get bait at lunch time cause 2 do smelt were belly up. I'm thinking it's my setup

How many smelt in the bucket?  I usually just throw mine in a small  cooler with an OX tablet,  if I buy them ahead of time I get them bagged with OX.

we typically do 3 dozen per 5 gallon insulated bucket. 15 go right in the water when we set traps.I figured 1 dozen per fisherman 3 dozen to a bucket.

That number should be O.K,  are you using water from the bait shop?

Come see us and we will put them in oxygenated bags, at no extra cost. People have had pretty good success doing this. More than happy to try and help you out. There is always Lucky Bait in Greenville (across from Napa) who nets his own smelt.
