What do you drop as an attractant?
« on: Dec 29, 2005, 03:02 PM »
Anybody here have any secret "stuff" that they drop to attract fish?  I've heard of eggshells being dropped and I've hung a CD before on mono with a swivel.  That didn't work but I'm going to try it again.  I've also considered Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, etc but I'm not sure they will sink.   Also might try some crystal cat litter or actual tropical fish food.   Anybody have any ideas or am I a little crazy? :cookoo:

Crushed eggshells, semi-cooked rice, a tiny bit of glitter stuff, ground up fish parts, or canned sardines. The visual attractant should be accompanied by a smell bait as it may drift in the water column. This works for stationary tips better than jiggin'an' movin' with a Vex, where you can see most of the stuff on the screen 'till it gets out of range.
Sardines, and/or other fish scales have natural growing 'Crystals' called Guanine in them. That's what makes the sheen/shine in nail polish and some paints. They are natural and non-invasive or toxic but can create problems if you import what diseases may be on them from other waters. Catch your 'Glitter' locally, scale the fish, scrunch it up with a bit of cooked Sardine/Salmon oil from the can and watch as it drifts down. stick a flashlight down to just under the surface of the water and you'll see it glistening. Keep the light there for a few minutes and it'll draw the visually acclimated fish from further away to investigate. Good luck and tight lions. ;D

Thanks, Chainsaw.  Sounds like what I used to make for raccoon bait, but not "stored" as long.
Tight lions to you too.

Come to think of it, if there were more tight lions we wouldn't be having this population boom and all the sightings.  :o

I like a little bit of tuna fish in the shallows for pike, I think they like the smell of the oily fish. I'll wrap it in some old pantyhose with a sinker on some mono.......

My pops has used crushed up egg shells on and off for as long as I can remember and I don't know why because it doesn't seem to increase his catch.  His latest try was a glass jar on a rope full of minnows with orange ribbon tied to the rope (I think he's ready for the home). This may have given the fish a good laugh but didn't cause them to bite. The only stuff I throw down the hole seems to be left overs from my lunch I pack with me, which usually happens on very slow days when desperation sets in. This stuff usually floats around for a while then sinks, I've observed bluegills watch the junk but they just seem to be puzzled by it and then leave .

We've had luck with jerkey before too.  I don't drop anything, but a guy I fish with punchs some holes in a can of cat food, (top and bottom) and ties it to a piece of braided line so he can retrieve it.  He swears by it, but I usually catch as many or more than him.  I keep telling him we're looking for perch and eyes, not catfish ;D
Fish may be stupid but I've never seen a perch sitting in a boat with a second degree sun burn trying to catch a man.
