help me pick my new shanty please
« on: Dec 07, 2014, 09:06 PM »
Hey guys. Selling my clam 6800 this week. Any input on a good warm flip over 2 man for around 300$?

I agree with a used one. There's not a whole lot of options out there, probably none, for a warm (insulated) two man flipover.

Just keep the hub and bolt it to a otter tub

Yeah, used is the only way you'll find a thermal shanty for $300. I bought a Frabill Thermal Trekker DLX this year and so far I love it!  It's very well built and the seats are very comfy. I paid $539 + tax though. Good luck with your search!

You can get the Otter Cottage 650 for $449 at Fleet farm.  Only the top is insulated but it's better than none.

Well, I think I changed my mind. I think I'm going to keep my clam. The only thing I really don't like about it is the amount of light that the thin blue fabric let's through, and the fact that it isn't very thick at all. Any solutions?

Clam FAQ

Q: There are cracks on the inside finish of the fabric of my shelter. Is this normal? Can anything be done to fix this?

It is normal for some of the dark colored coating to come off the inside of the tent. Over time, as you set up and take down the shelter, the dark coating can begin to flake off, especially along the folds in the fabric when the shelter is collapsed. This does not affect the function of the fabric. If you feel that too much light is now entering your shelter in the places where some of the coating has come off, you may wish to apply a new layer of rubberized coating. A product you may use for this is Loctite Color Guard (black), available in liquid (paint-on) or aerosol form. The product number is LOC 34894. This is available at many hardware or home improvement stores.

I too have a 6800 ...let me know what you deicide and how well it worked out for you

Pick one in this order:

Otter
Frabill
Eskimo
Shappell
Clam

Fixed this for you.

Honestly I would buy a used otter before I bought any new shack at the $300 price point

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

There really isn't any dark inside coating on my shack. It's a single thin blue layer of fabric. Could possibly use some sort of coating on the inside I suppose..
