I thought aspen was great until I melted the piston in my jiffy late last year. Shell premium only for me now.

So off topic but is was under impression premium was not good either as it burns hotter? I burn aspen as well you can find it at lamberts not sure where else.

Hey Motocross,  were you running Aspen-2 (pre-mix) or Aspen-4 with your own oil?

I was running the aspen 2 stroke fuel. I have used premium in all of my 2 stroke engines for years with no problems. I wanted to try the aspen just for the easy use, ran about 3 liters through the auger and it burnt out the piston.

i have a question, Ive been running regular pre- mixed gas as per specs on my auger for over 20 years same auger and do my regular pre season and post season service and have never had one problem. so the question is whats so great about these fuel alternatives. it,s like everything else someone try,s it and the next thing you know its Gospel.if it made that big of difference you would think the manufactures would recomend it to prolong the life of their augers.

I would think the pro to it is the fuel doesn't break down so you can leave it in your auger without tearing it apart and spraying sea foam and whatever else people do. I haven't fired mine up yet so I don't really know if that's true. I do see your point ripnflutter but also think that newer better products do come along. If spending a few extra bucks on fuel means I don't have to tear my auger apart I am sold. To each their own though. Maybe engineman could give his opinion seeing as he does work on small engines.

My husky and jiffy both didn't seem to run as good on aspen fuel so I switched back to conventional. I tried it in my tanaka last weekend and it seems to run ok but I think I will stick regular premix.

It is nice not having to mix fuel up though.

Every time I ever tried to store them dry I had problems. Now I just make sure I keep a full tank of fresh fuel in them and run them 1-2x a month in the off season, haven't had a problem in years doing it this way.

Layne - you are such a flip flopper.  Last year (or maybe the year before) Aspen was the crap for you!  Just giving you a hard time.

I put it in my Jiffy last year and had no issues, but it concerns me a little bit after reading motocross's post.  What are your thoughts Engineman?  You are obviously using it and haven't seen any negative effects yet.

Haha I knew someone would call me out on that, I was pretty stoked when I first found out about it because I hate mixing gas and had problems with gumming up carbs in the past. I have nothing against it at all other than the husky didn't seem to like it after awhile(ran hotter??) and the price! A 5L jerry can will pretty much last the season so now I just suck it up and mix a can of regular with a packet of that opti-2, works good and its 1/6th the price.

I'm sure if you take the time on any of your small 2 stroke engines lawnmower, snowblower, trimmers, augers it don't matter there all the same and do regular pre and post season maintenance like you should do anyway. you should never have any issues. at least when it comes to the fuel and carb,s. fresh clean gas, proper oil mix ratio, new plug every year or to, it,s not rocket science. anyone who is trying to sell you a new and improved better way are blowing smoke you know where. and besides these fuel alternatives burn hot from what I've been reading..... and that's never a good thing for 2 strokes. and that's a fact jack..lol

Your sure right it's not rocket science. Only difference ripnflutter is I don't need new fuel. I like the ease of not mixing or draining or spraying a bunch of gunk in my auger. Layne even with the aspen I fire mine up a few times in the summer I think it's a great idea.

This will be my 3rd year using it in my 2 stroke equipment. I've had 0 problems with it. I do know that some Husqvarna equipment doesn't like Aspen, and if that be the case Husqvarna has their own fuel now. Seems to work well in it's equipment line. I am a bit hesitant to use it in older equipment, as it DOES burn hotter, however, having said that I haven't seen any damage to older stuff yet. It's just me being a little cautious. Overall, I like it and will continue to use it until I have reason to discontinue it.

Engineman, are you running the pre-mix or are you running the Aspen-4 then mixing it with AmsOil Saber or Opti2????  Any word on how it performs on a Tanaka 270 powerhead?  Thanks again! :)

I use the premix. I've heard nothing bad about it in a Tanaka.

Ethanol ,ethanol ,ethanol. destroys carbs and lines. I own a landscape/lawncare company and have many two stroke items and the gas these days  hardens rubber and brakes down ,gaskets, o rings, gas lines so fast compared to other years its crazy. I bought a roll of gas line off ebay for that. I'm guessing 2 stroke will not be being built more then another ten years. I hope that augers will go brushless and high powered lithium with built in battery warmers on the auger would be sweet. In the truck/car RC world electric allready dominates the nitros. The lithum augers of today are on the right track. give it another decade or two and it will be great. maybe not for small engine guys but electric will open up another world for repairs I'm sure
