Accessories in a permanent
« on: Dec 08, 2014, 08:34 PM »
A buddy and I built a small skid house this year, and finally got it on the ice on top of some impressive crappies! This is my first permanent fish house and just wondering what some of you guys keep in your house that you always use. I know the obvious ones like ice scoop, pliers, stuff like that but what other things come in handy??

fifth of crown for those extra cold nights

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

Unfortunately most people here don't keep anything in their permanents due to the large number of break-ins.  :-\

I always keep a few seats, buckets, rods, hand auger, spud, and scoop, propane and a lantern.  Maybe some other stuff.
More important is what to NOT leave in there.  It finally happened to me and I lost everything. Luckily I didn't have too awful much. But well over a couple hundred dollars worth.
Don't ever leave electronics, power auger, your good rods/tip ups. Your favorite jigs and what not.  Anything you leave in there you need to think. Is the convenience of this staying out here worth it for when it eventually gets stolen.

I used to keep a permy out on saginaw bay before the walleye got started, couldn't lock it cause someone would break the lock off, so I left it open. Never left anything in it but everytime I went out to use it there was cigarette butts, chew, sandwich bags, cans and bottles. Because it was used so much a lot of water would enter the shanty and freeze inside. so when it came time to pull it in the spring, it was frozen to the ice. So it got burned. The last time I used it I would take a container of fuel oil with me, and set it on fire as I was leaving under the cover of darkness.

I built a shelf in one corner, can never have enuf storage space. Got an rv light and mounted it to the roof, ran the wires to my storage shelf and hooked up a three spot cig lighter to it and connect my 12 volt deep cycle to all of em. Have lots of power outlets and lots of light when needed. I also have lots of 1/2 drilled in #8 wood screws  all over and  above. On these I can place clothing, rods by the top guide, pots and pans, ect. Be sure to have a broom, shovel and extra rope or what ever u use to tow the shack around. Last thing is some kind of wind block, cause as solid a door is, wind still finds a way in. I suggest carpet or a rubber mat.

My last permanent got broke into several times. I eventually left the door unlocked just to come out one morning to find that someone used it for an outhouse. AWWWWWW Nice! I can only hope that on that eventful day Santa was watching and they were promptly put on the naughty list!
