Clam Split Handle Series Ice Rod
« on: Nov 24, 2014, 06:28 AM »
Has anybody held one of these in their hand? What did you think of it. As I have one 36 inch m/h on its way. Nephew ordered it for me. Will be using it for walleye on Lake Erie hopefully this winter.

I used the 32"MH last season for Erie 'eyes and was happy with it's performance. Plenty of backbone.

I have a 28" ML and a 30" M sitting by the door waiting to wet a line. I got them on sale for $15 a peice from fleet farm. The sale is still going for those interested(link below).

As for first impressions, they feel well balanced but maybe a touch stiffer than the advertised weight. That may be because they are glass though. All my other rods are graphite. They seem to load evenly. The line guides are not lined up terribly well either. They will certainly work without issue, but it does make a guy question the craftsmanship of the rest of the rod. 10 years ago seeing Dave Genz on a product meant quality. I don't know if that is really the case anymore.

I have the 28" ML and as stated above, it is probably the stiffest ML I own. I got mine on sale last year at Dick's but it sounds like your nephew got an even better deal. Def worth the money. I added a Frabill Titanium Spring and use it mainly for perch - you should like it for eyes' as is.

They are Ice Hopper brand on sportmans direct. Exact same rod except for the guides. I actually prefer the guides on the Ice Hoppers.
